I'm not sure, but I think the chainstay tubing changed from a diamond profile to a round profile. For increased chainring clearance. Can anyone confirm this?

I think that move was made from 2009 to 2010. But yes the current chainstays are no longer diamond-y.

How much more clearance do the non-diamond tubes have? I have a 2009 and run an XT 22-32-42 crankset. I'd like to switch it to a 2x crank running 26-36, but I can't fit any middle ring bigger than 32. I tried a 36 middle ring and it contacts the chainstay.

I love my Air 9. Chainring clearance is my only complaint.

I own a 2011 Air9 and using X9 2x10 with 39/26 chainrings no problem and also have mounted a Lightning SL with 36/22 without any clearance problem.
