Newbie Needs advice!

Hi all,

I have recently become interested enough in SS to actually build one. I have lurked on this board for awhile and have seen some great posts, but now I have a question. I am using a ancient Trek frame for my first build, but my M.O. is to hang decent parts on whatever frame I can get my hands on and then move them to a better frame when funds allow.

This build is already slightly over-budget, so with that said the BB and cranks are useless and need to be replaced. I need low budget options for those and an opinion on whether to use a singleator or an EBB. Also any suggestions for a newbie's gearing, I was thinking about a 32:16. I want to be able to do a bit of both road and off-road.

Buy a Shimano DX 16t sprocket.
Disassamble two old cassettes, use the spacers and the lockring to get a perfect chainline.
Use an old derailleur as singulator.
Use the screws to adjust the chainline.
Buy an Alivio cranckset (FCM410?) with taper axle (BBUN53).
Use only the middle chainring.
By doing so, you'll have to grind down the female part of te chainringbolts, or use rivets to make up for the space th outher ring normaly takes up.
I posted some pictures of a simular setup here.
I have a 175mm pair of acera square taper cranks with a 32t or 44t ring and BB which you can have for zero dollars plus shipping. Pray you're in the same country :)

Thanks for the help, this is pretty much my setup except, I had an Exage crankset w/ Bio pace rings - for which I could't find round replacements.
