New to this forum, have Nexus 7 questions

I'm looking at a used cruiser bike with a Nexus 7 with coaster brake. I'd like to know are they durable for light off road use? What problems should I be looking for? Are there better options like 5 spd derailler? Any other ideas/opinions/headsup are appreciated.
