I'm new to mountain biking and considering purchasing a bike. My budget is around 250-300. I'm looking for something that is upgradable in the future. What size frame do I need? I'm 5'8 205 pounds. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

new mountain biker

You should be able to pick up a quality hardtail in your price range. I have a Gary Fisher Advance that I like. It was around $340. Go to a couple of bike shops and look around. Tell them what you're looking for. Trek, Giant, Raleigh, Ibex are some good brands. Just don't buy anything from a dept. store. Good luck!

If you buy used you will get alot more bike for the money. My guess on size is medium, but will depend on the particular bike.

This is what I would do. If you look in the classifieds you will see that people are selling used bikes that are in good condition all of the time. If you are worried about a used bike look for an older year model since many shops will try to clear them out to make room for the newer stuff. What every you choose, have fun and welcome to a great sport.

I went with an Iron Horse

After a few weeks of agonizing research, I recently went with an Iron Horse Warrior Comp
($550 from Performance) as my first mountain bike. I could not find any better value out there. I didn't really consider Ibex due to not being able to test ride one. Iron Horse has a model close to your price range - the Maverick Comp. Performance has it on sale now for $320. I've only had my Warrior Comp a few weeks now, but I absolutely love it. You should at least give them a look (especially if you live near a Performance store).
