New to mountain biking - right size???

My wife blessed me this Christmas with a 17 Specialized Hardrock Sport 29 w/ disc. I raced a ton of bmx as a kid, but have never owned a mountain bike. This rig feels a bit short to me. As if I should have more space between my ass and the handle bar. LBS says its the correct size. I'm 5'10, 160lb. Again Im not sure how it should feel exactly as I am not familiar with mountain bikes per se. Does this sound about right?

I'm the same size and I like the large.

5'10" puts you kind of between what specialized calls a Medium and a Large. Which one you ride is a personal preference. Technically by the charts 5'10" puts you on the top of the Medium size, but being 5'10" I prefer the large.

The bottom line is if you are not comfortable in the Medium then swap it out for a Large if you can, if you can't you will probably get used to the Medium.
