Found this locally for a good price and decided to get it.

Everything seems to be working 100% except the brakes, it seems like the pads might have become contaminated or something. I get a good squeeze from the front caliper but not much grab.

Now to decide if I want to get rid of this.

Hold onto your hardtail. It's a good idea to have a backup when your other bike is down for maintenance.

Yep I have found over the years that a back up is very very good insurance.

Is the repacker unreliable?

I think I might keep the trek and throw some roadish tires on it.

I've had mine since late 2015 and ride 2-3 times week, i love it. I've upgraded a few things because I have the parts such as rims for tubeless, added 1X11 XT, change the rear shock for a Monarch Plus RC3 (stock is on a loaner bike and running fine, just a quick reset the negative chamber every few months). I did add offset bushings as well. I have no intent on selling and at 53 and 225 lbs and still ride pretty hard it's been great...

Has nothing to do with reliability but things on a bike can break. You may need a shock rebuild, a hub bearings may need to be changed, rear hub could go out, might crash and break a shifter. All the above may necessitate the bike being down for a couple days. Always good to have a B bike so that you don’t miss a ride.

My first ride on the Breezer. I ran the same route with my Xcal a few days ago (although for only 6.7 miles) and I swear this thing pedals easier. I'll admit I used my granny gear some with the 29er but not with the 27.5. The Breezer has much more aggressive tires and tubes and it's still easier to ride.
