Hey WV folks,

Quick question. I'm heading to New River for the 4th weekend and I want to get some details on the riding in that area. I've checked out the trail review section on MTBR and haven't gotten a solid feel for whether or not I want to bring my bike. I'm heading there with a crew of friends, some ride, some don't. We really only have about 2.5 days there, so I'm wondering if it's worth hauling the bike down there, if the trails are only mediocre. I know Snowshoe is where it's at for mtn biking in WV.

So, if anyone could give any feedback on the area, it would be much appreciated. I'm looking for a nice 3-4 hr ride with some technical terrain and ridiculous vistas.

Thanks all

D

It IS worth hauling the bike down to, unfortunately I don't know the trails there well enough to advise you. I've rode there w/ friends who knew the place. I would advise stopping by one of the LBS's or guild companies and asking them. I've had some great rides there. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

As far as technical riding goes the best place to ride is the "backyard" of the ACE Adventure Center. If you Google "Captain Thurmond's Challenge 2006" and look at their course map you'll get a good feel for the ACE trails. Other than that, you can do a long out-and-back on the Southside Junction trail (I believe it runs Thurmond-Cunard). I haven't ridden the Kaymoor trail in a long time, so I don't remember much of it, other that it's fast down and a long climb back up... nor do I remember the Thurmond-Minden trail well.

ACE is your best bet.
