New/Old XT Hydros

I'm new to disk brakes so I need some advise.

My LBS has a set of XT hydros that are a few years old. But new in the box. They have the 6 bolt rotors, not centerlock, and stainless hose. I think he said they have 4 pistons.?

I can get them for $275.00 for the set? Is that a good deal? Are they good brakes?

Yes they are great brakes. The 4 pot XT's are very well regarded. They have amazing stopping power and modulation. Their biggest drawback is by current standard they are fairly heavy compared to modern ultra light discs. About 100g heavier per wheel than say an XTR. The price is pretty outrageus. They might be new but I remember them retailing for around $99 to $119 per set when they were the current model. $275 for the set is way too damn much. For $150 I might consider it.

But remember that that didn't include the hoses (which I assume are included in this deal, which use to retail from around $20+ each). I think Bike Source still has the front brake listed for about $100 (no hose) and Cambria recently had the front for $80 (also no hoses).

Chain Reaction Cycles in the UK still has rears available, but you will have to mix the M755 and M756 levers.

Unlike the more recent Shimano offerings these usually at least include the rotor, calipers and levers. As Hecubus said, they are good brakes.

thanks

The set is complete with Levers, hose, rotor, and cals. I started looking at the Avid Mechs. but they offered these as an "upgrade". I think i can get the Avids sub $200. Can't I? I have rim brakes now so I could still use my current levers with the avids.
