Thinking about increasing travel on the Pike to 140 or installing a -1 degree headset. The primary goal is to reduce twitchy handling at high speeds. I think 140 does this by reducing the angle and would prefer this route as getting a tad more travel would be a nice bonus. I think the longer travel would help reduce pedal strikes. True? I have tried X-Low and liked the effect on handling, but pedal strikes increased to the point I went back to Low. I think the -1 headset would also result in more pedal strikes. I see a number of people who have posted about going with -1, but what’s the difference between that route and X-Low? Looking for feedback/ recommendations from those who have tried this stuff. Thanks.
So the angleset would not effects reach as much as a longer travel fork.

These threads typically become questions about sizing, so I’ll add that I’m 6’-0” and ride a Large - which feels great and not stretched at all.

I did consider a M seeing Evil has me right in the middle of the sizing, but can’t imagine being on a smaller frame.

Depending on other things like inseam, etc., I’d suggest everyone from 5’-10” up should probably demo both sizes.

didnt have option for a Large, just put on a 70mm stem and all is good, need to slide seat back a small amount.

XLOW slackens both the head angle and the STA and drops the BB about 8mm. And you only get about half a degree of difference in the head angle. Angle set will drop the BB 2-3mm but it also slackens your HA a full degree and steepens your STA at the same time. My terrain is basically rock with a tiny bit of dirt on top if we're lucky. It's pretty much designed for pedal strikes. I went with the angle set to keep the BB up and steepen the STA a touch. I don't suffer any more pedal strikes now than I added the angle set to a 130 fork. For me, the angle set is a better option than XLOW since I ride up hill I rocky terrain as much as I go down. Might be different if I lived somewhere else that had different terrain, but I still think I would prefer the steeper STA you get with the angle set versus XLOW.

Great information. Thanks!

What effect, if any, does an angle set have on reach? I'm thinking it would be extremely minimal, if any.

An angleset will lower the front end slightly, which will lengthen the reach ever so slightly, but it will also physically move the steerer tube back in the frame a few mm which will shorten the effective reach. So overall the change will be a decrease of a very small number of mm.

Thanks. This is consistent with what I was told by Evil customer service in a call today. I think I'll go with the angle set. He disagreed with what has been shared here with increasing to 140 would lower the BB. It will raise the BB, since the longer fork is slightly tilting back the entire bike. He said that unless I'm bottoming out the 130 (Pike, and I'm not), he would recommend and personally go with the angle set if he wanted a less twitchy bike at high speeds (more composed).

Anyone 5’8” riding the V3? Did you go with small or medium? I’ve been riding a V1 Following since 2016 and want to keep the poppy, bmx like nature of the bike, but worry the small will feel cramped (given reach/stack/SA) and the medium would feel too long, especially since the consensus on this tread is medium is pretty spot on for 5’10”. I appreciate any real world perspectives.

I’m in the same boat. I had a medium v1 offering and after longer days the reach felt long when I got tired and fatigued. I also didn’t like how twitchy it felt with a shorter stem. The reach looks longer on the v3 following than the v1 offering. You really have to stay over the bars with these longer bikes I’ve found, chest right on top of the bars. It’s unreal how far some of the pros are over the front, I feel like I would front flip.

I'm 5'7" on a medium, and I feel very comfortable with the riding position. It also feels very poppy and playful to me, but I haven't ridden a small Following. Previous bikes had 20mm shorter reach and I very much prefer the longer reach - feels much more stable when trying to charge (I'm sure the lower bottom bracket height contributes to this as well).

I think one of the keys to the fit for me was the fact a 180mm oneup dropper fits slammed to the collar, gives it more of a dirt jumper feel than other bikes I've been on.

what size: stem are you running? Bar rise and stack height?

Thanks Thumper. I’d be curious about phof’s set up as well. Also, phof - what type of terrain are you on? I’m on the east coast (and not in the mountains) where it’s largely punchy ups and downs / tight and twisty.

Stock 45mm evil stem plus spacers, oneup carbon 35mm rise (same sweep/rise as the stock evil bars). The standard setup felt great to me, didn't mess with it.

SoCal so some rolling XC but mostly rocky and loose terrain, plenty of steeps. Not so much tight and twisty or ups and downs. I'm not the fastest or most wreckless, but it's served me well and this bike gave me confidence to hit lines that I had been skipping on my previous 150mm 27.5" bikes.

Same, I’m in RI and ride CT, and MA a lot. I get up north when I can but harder with two young kids. Certainly miss hunting the steepest stuff I could find but I can complain, I will ride anywhere and be happy.

Wagon wheel confidence is legit!
