New Disc Wheels under 250

Hey there party people. Im looking to replace my current xt/rhino lite combo from pricepoint. I toasted the hubs and freewheel, and need a replacement for my Kona The King. I am 6'4 225, and would like something that can handle my size, and not break the bank. I ride on the aggressive side of XC, but nothing too gnarly. At my size do I get any benefits from spending a lot more than $250, or will i just end up with a light wheel set that buckles under my awesome hugeness ;) , or a wayyy too beefy set of freeride wheels? Should I just get the xt Rhino's again despite the sh*tty seals?

Thanks

Get the extra beefy freeride wheels and never worry about it. Azonic Outlaws!
Look at the banner ad at the top o' this page. It's our forum sponsor's ad and they build mtb wheelsest in all weights and prices. If you think FR might be too much then they have AM wheelsets too.
I'm 220lbs and ride aggressive XC as well...to me the Azonic wheelset is way overkill for that. I could use those for FR no problem, but they're 2x the wheel needed for what your Kona is designed for.

I'm not sure what you mean by sh!tty seals on XT hubs...nothing is waterproof but a simple overhaul occasionally with a good waterproof grease (like Phil Wood) keeps them going for a while. That said, you could upgrade to the BWW Hubs or check out these Sun SOS with DT Onyx hubs for a smokin' deal
That looks like a smokin' deal but it says "Out of Stock" at the bottom of that page
I saw that deal on the Sun Onyx earlier, but wasnt familiar with the set. Ill have to keep an eye out for them.

As to the XT seals comment, I was fairly disappointed in the xt hubs as the freewheel and bearings seemed to burn up relatively quickly despite a fairly routine maintenance schedule, and almost no wet trail riding.

Thanks for the comments, and keep em coming

Well that just Blows Goats...that was a premium deal, guess that's why they're out of stock
Consider upping your price point to say $350-$400 and you have several very good options from BWW with their house brand hubs
Cane Creek

In that pricerange I would take a look at the Cane Creek Zonos Disc wheelset. Supposed to be pretty bombproof and Cane Creek still have some sets left, for 250$....
Those cane creeks sound pretty solid, and the reviews also look good. Im bidding on a set on ebay.
And they use the Bontrager TLR tubeless system...if that kind of thing interests you

Should it interest me? I dont have any experience with tubeless. Anyone know if i can run normal tires and tubes on these wheels until i upgrade the tires?

YES you can run normal tires:thumbsup:

Tubeless=Lower PSI, no pinch flats, reduced puncture flats (with sealant virtually eliminated), better traction:D
Cane Creek

The only thing that scares me about the Cane's is the straight pull spokes. Mavic (some)/ Cane Creek / Easton all have hubs that utilize straight pulls.. but have you ever tried to find replacements at your LBS? GL with that. I prefer a standard hub/spoke arrangement for the ease of spoke replacement.

Just my honest opinion though.. :)
I was in the same position you are in, and I now have a set of Outlaws on the way. I was just tired of bending my wheels so often and wanted a no-fuss wheelset that could take some abuse. I was not too concerned with weight, rim strength was my #1 concern. Plus I did not have a lot of money to spend, so I went with the Outlaws. I can't wait for them to get here, I just taco'd my front wheel again Sunday so I can't ride until they get here.....come on Thursday!
WHAT! shoot me a message on how that happened. I don't feel so bad anymore.
Mavic Crossrides. $249 at Tree Fort.
