New Crank

Looking for a new crankset for now and eventually will upgrade the whole drivetrain, but I have an 8-speed. Does it matter if it says that it is compatible with 9-speed? Will it work?

I had this same issue about 6 months back. I stripped the non drive side crank arm where the pedal screws in and needed something new (was using the stock suntour xcc cranks...terrible cranks). I did my research and ended up going to a single ring on the front because of compatibility issues. what I didn't realize is that a crankset isn't like a cassette where the spacing isn't really an issue between 8 speed and 9 speed chains. 9 speed compatible cranksets should work just fine with your 8 speed chain. I don't regret my decision to go 1x8 but I could have easily bought the 9 speed compatible and have been fine. which set are you looking at in particular?
I have no idea to be honest with you lol. What would you recommend for XC and some DJ without breaking the bank?
"9 speed" cranksets are compatible with an existing 8 speed drivetrain.

Shimano SLX are quite affordable and tough as well, XT cranksets are probably as tough and lighter.

I live my SLX cranks and BB. I have only been on them a couple months, but no problems and easy to install!

ETA: I got mine for $145 shipped on ebay.
See if you can hunt down some Hones. They're the predecessor to the SLX line and can now be found online for some silly prices.
