New build advice.

I am about to embark on the build of a new bike for next season. I currently ride a 04 Stumpjumper Anniversary. I am thinking that now is a good time to sell before all the 05's are out and 04 are for sale all over. One went for 2500 on ebay which would give me some money to start out with. I race Expert, enjoy technical fast riding, and weigh 180 so durability is important. I am leaning toward purchasing a Turner Burner, but am open to suggestions. I am uncertain which wheels would work best for me. I like the Crossmax's that I have now, but they are expensive to purchase alone, and I know there are lighter possibilites. I have a set of rhino lites to use as training wheels, so I need a race wheelset. Below is a preliminary build list. If you have any suggestions that will increase preformance, save weight, or save money I would appreciate it. Also if you think I am stupid for thinking about selling my current bike I would appreciate that as well. Here is the list. Sorry the list is hard to read. I made it in Excel, and when I pasted it into here it got all wacko. In the edit windo it looks good, but in the post like crap, sorry. The first number you see is the weight of the part, the second the cost. Hope it is not hard to figure out.

Looks really good. Some thoughts:

Ediscount has some Truvative Stylo cranksets on Ebay for $69.99 right now. You also may want to check out the Race Face Turbines, they're a little lighter than the Stylos and you can find them for $100 for the arms, or $150 for a complete crankset. For either of these sets, there are lighter rings.

I'm not sure that theres a whole lot of difference between the XT shifters and the LX shifters. They weigh the same, they seem to shift the same to me. LX shifters would save some money.

When you order your wheels, get a set of those Speedcific skewers from Odds n' Endos as well. I don't know if you included the skewers in your wheelset or not.

The stylo cranks that are on ebay are just Stylos and not Stylo teams. I am not really sure if there is a difference in the crank, but I do know that the Team comes with the Nickle plated CNC'd rings. This may not make any difference to me because I am thinking about trying to use a Road rear cassete and derailier, and buying smaller rings for the front to keep about the same ratio. I have heard talk about that on here, but am not certain where to get the rings? Will they fit a stylo crankset. What ratio do you need to get the equivialiant of a 24-34? I will look into the Turbines, as well as the LX shifter pods. Thanks again

If you want to get a road cassette and der and keep the same ratio then Stylos are not for you as they can't fit a 20t granny (they are 4 arm 64/104 PCD, you need 5 arm compact). Your best option is Turbines with some lightweight rings and alloy bolts. That is an excellent weight weenie bang for buck. You need also a 20t granny which is only slightly taller than 24/34. I got my rings (including the 20t) from Cambria, the US made brand.

Yup, exactly right. I'm also running this system, make sure you get the 58/94 5-bolt compact pattern, cuz the standard bolt pattern won't work. Look into the Vuelta SE plus chain rings. I've seen these at my LBS and they are light, plus they are ramped and pinned. I'm curious as to how well they shift, as I'm probably going to try them when I need new chainrings. Plus any LBS should be able to order them.

Boj: How do the U.S. made rings shift? I know that Duckman feels that they shift pretty good. The standard Vuelta alloy rings without ramps or pins shift O.K., but not outstanding, and not nearly as smooth as the Suginos do. I'd like your opinion because they seem pretty light and economical.

You know, at first I wasn't sure. But after adjusting my FD, my US Machine middle ring(31t...yes thats 31t)has shifted flawlessly all season. Raced it again today at our SE champ finals. Not one time did the front not shift crisp and clean, and this course was a mofo. Not much to my middlering. Gotta be light as hell. Same for all those discount Real rings I'm running(black NRS uses a 42t and 32t. Blue NRS uses a 42t. HT 2x9 uses a 36t)shift great as well. All are like $12-19. Depending if 6065 or 7075 alum. Much lighter then the RF rings(made by Blackspire).

The blue bikes current 42-31-20t 5 bolt compact setup(yes its actually diff from that other older pic you see so often:)). Actually running a 11-32xt cassette on it ATM with an alloy lockring for 250gms. $37 from Jenson before the went up. Dammit, as I'd like to get a couple more for stock. Altho I like the 11-27 Duraace setup with it, the regained overlap sure is nice. Keeps me in the middle ring alot more in the heat of battle, ya know? Still under 22lbs at 21lb 12oz with the sorta heavy Schwalbe Jimmy Light up front(Twister SS rr). Joined the crowd and got a King ti bottle cage and some PorkRinds. The grips are so small tho, that my 2nd in from the pinky finger...wrapped too far around the grip and into my thumb as I one finger brakes. It kept getting numb today. Think I might go back to those wonderfully comfy Ritchey WCS grips. Add 30gms. Damn.



After todays race. All dusty and happy. hehehe. 8 races this season(one was a 60 miler in Pisgah), and not one problem..um..except for my friggin seatpost slipping down a ton today. DAMN me! My fault....



Zee post(note slipped amt after I fixed it). The entire race. Arrrrgh!! Was like racing a BMX, which SUCKS by the way. Used a new ti bolt in the clamp assem, and its threads bottomed out before it was all the way tight. Hence the slipping prob. Saved 3 grams tho. :(. Dopey me.

Hey,

I actually don't have them yet but have just earmarked them for next buy. In any case even if I did have them they'd not be on the bike yet cause its still not ready. Not long though. I recon 2-3 weeks more and its finished. Cranks saddle and tires should be here in a week and all that's left is the wheelset and chainrings. Here are some pics of WIP:


As for the chainrings I originally wanted to have 20-30-40 but I didn't want to spend $$ on Specialites TA and could never find those Vueltas for some reason. In the end I'll go for setup identical to Duck. 20-31-42. I'm used to shifting with power off having 22/36 on my current bike so even if they're not the slickest shifting rings they won't dissapoint me for sure (unless they're heavy :D).

Hope you have better luck with "US Made" chainrings than I did. I was sent a bunch of mis-matched heavier than advertised rings. Some were from Vuelta, others said Salsa or nothing at all. The styles didn't even match. I promptly sent them back to Cambria. They are very good about returns and are always very nice and helpful on the phone, but I have had the worst luck ordering from them. In my experience, "what you see is what you get" maybe 50% of the time at best when you order less popular items.

TA Rings...

Boj,

The TA rings arent all that expencive when you consider the cost of buying rings here- Australia for those that dont know. I'm pretty sure I worked out a whole ring set was about $180AUD shipped from www.bike2build.com ( I may be wrong with the calculation)... But RaceFace rings are like $80AUD each, FSA's are pretty expencive also.

Plus the TA's look trick :D

Your buildd sounds pretty cool: I have always loved Turner's, and was actually considering the Burner from Supergo before I got my Cove hardtail, and I'm actually considding getting one now too, before the Cove is finished :rolleyes:

actually given how expensive turbines still tend to be, his best bet is a pair of those Ritchey Logic arms that are on ebay as they're 5-bolt compacts, and at 450g for the arms, only 20g heavier than turbines. But at $40US, a damn lot cheaper.

Not sure if you ever bought any corkies before (as I've lost track of how many weenies on here have bought 'em) but they're thicker than the pork rinds and just as light. I got BIG hands and never ran into a wrapping around problem.

I don't think you are stupid . . .

. . . but you won't be any faster on your $3300 Burner than your Stumpjumper. My first thought is that the Burner may not have quite the race geometry you would want. Don't assume because it is a top-notch quality frame that it is right for the application and rider. If you have ridden the Nokians and like them, that's great. Personally I think they are totally unacceptable and would rather ride a full slick with a decent sidewall. The Syntace may be a bit flexy (relative to a Thomson) unless you are using a really short stem. Get a Fox fork or keep the one you've got. I can't imagine spending money while downgrading to a Marzocchi. I'm 185lb and race expert too and wish I could justify the $$ to swap my Marzocchi for a Fox. I think your final weight is 2lbs optimistic.

I looked at the spec for the Stumpjumper and it decked out with XTR, very good wheels, etc. Really, Why would you "upgrade"? Maybe sell the frame and move the parts over? Maybe go disc with a new set of wheels at that?

Well for one thing,

I am having/have had alot of problems with the Stumpjumper. Fox fork has been back to Fox 2 times for new seal in the 8 months I have had it. I just installed Enduro seals last week, so hopfully that problem is solved. The rear Triad has been back 3 times to get fixed. 2 seals, and once the triad switch stopped working and it was open all the time. All repairs have been warranted by Fox with no problems. I consider a marathon an upgrade.
I cannot get my XTR disc's to stop squealing, and dragging. I have tried many things with no luck. I have taken it to a few bike shops and paid to have the brakes set-up and they are better for about .5 rides than back to dragging and squealing. Considering trying new rotors, maybe I got some of the early bad xtr's?
Crossmax Rear hub had to be rebulild when the freewheel stopped catching in the middle of a race for my first ever DNF. Thanks Mavic. Rear hub is starting to make loud ducklike squealing sounds at high speeds. Had LBS repack/regrease to no avail.
XTR dirvetrain has been flawless. Never misses a shift or drops a chain. Love the duel Control too. When the bike is working I absolutly love it. But sadly that has been for about 1 month out of 8. All the litle problems are driving me mad.
I appreciate the feedback, and am glad to hear I am not the only person over 170 racing. I hope my estimate of the burner weight is closer than 2 pounds. I did it for my stumpjumper and was within 200 grams.

Over 170lbs and racing, there is a few hevier riders here, somewhere! I dont race competitively or anything, but I am pretty quick at enduro racing, I guess thats my Niche(sp). Flog ya nuts off XC racing though, I seldem finish well :confused:

And Just for the record, I'm 195lbs :eek:
