I currently ride a mid-90's Trek 8000 hard tail that I've messed up the geometry on by installing a used Fox fork with 100mm of travel. So whatever I get, I'm sure to notice upgrades all around for the trails I ride in new england (up, down, rocks, roots, and the only smooth sweeping single track is during the winter). I haven't ever done any series downhill riding and don't anticipate that this will change.

I'm supposed to look at a '98 Santa Cruz Superlight today that has mid-2000's XTR components. Marzochi fork and Fox shock. Cable disc brakes. What is a fair price for this rig if it's in good shape?

Other bikes I've been looking at that are available locally are as follows based on what THINK I want and like:

Titus FTM
Yeti 575
Yeti ASR 5
Specialized Stumpjumper (various flavors)

I think these bikes also happen to be in descending order of price, but I don't know enough to tell if their value is real or perceived.

Any and all help would be appreciated.

Well I don't think I ended up with the 'best' bike of the bunch, but for $720 I got:

Santa Cruz Superlight - 2008 in orange
Fox RP23 shock
Marzocchi Bomber 2001 80 mm fork
XT shifters and front derailleur
XTR rear derailleur
S-Works bottom bracket (mid-2000's?)
Avid BB7 Mechanical Disc Brakes
Cane Creek head set
Thompson stem
Fox shock/fork pump
CO2 inflator kit

In your first post you say the SC is a '98 and in your second you say its an '08. If its an '08 that hasn't been ridden a whole bunch or has been maintained well, then its an okay deal. You can swap for a longer travel fork and be sitting pretty. If its a '98, not so much.

Can you post pics?
