Nevegal's 2.1 on Blur 03

831 Views 9 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  CraigH
I'm trying to find a large volume tire to replace my Kinetics 2.35. Last year I had to trim all the outter knobs a bit to be able to run it in the Blur, but I'm not willing to do it again.

Is the Nevegal 2.1 a good fat tire ? I know Craig (moderator) has it on his bike, any feedback?

Has anybody else tried a good fat tire that fits on the Bloor tight rear triangle? Mud is an issue (that's why I'm thinking 2.1) but the I'm interested on getting the fattest I can fit.

My buddy has the Nevegal 2.1 on the rear of his 03 Blur. Seems fine. It's a really sticky tire. Slow rolling but grips like mad. The new 05 Blur can take up to 2.5 but on the older frames, I don't think you can go much bigger than a big 2.1 like the Nevegal.
I run a 2.1 Nevegal in back

I have an '04 Blur with V-brake mounts, so same rear triangle as your bike. I would not run bigger than a 2.1 Nevegal. There's a little room, but not a lot, and if you're packing up mud it will disappear quickly.

Check out this photo of my rear triangle and the Nevegal, it will give you an idea of how much room you have to play with:

I'm not sure I am a fan of the Nevegal. I have been on only 12 or so rides with it, and the blocks have worn nearly 50% already. The tire isn't going to last even a season! It grips incredibly well on loose and rocky surfaces, and wet roots are not a problem. However if your mud is a bit clay-like, it packs up very quickly. I don't have this problem with the Blue Groove front tire though.

I may go back to my Velociraptor rear tire to see how that compares when this tire wears out.

Thanks for the info. Is the Nevegal you're using a Sticky compound one?
I thought you could get them as regular or sticky, at least that's how it works for the Kinetics.
I had the regular kinetics and it lasted 2.5 years.

You're saying your Nevegal wears fast, is this on regular dirt trails or do you ride them on rock - hard surfaces.

It's a Stick-E folding bead. This is on regular dirt trails, with some rocks, loose soil, and mostly fireroad/paved paths for ascending.
Question for CraigH:

Going through old posts I found you're currently using 2.1 Nevegals, and you've used Kinetics in the back, right? I really liked the Kinetics , but I'm wondering if the 2.1 Nevegal is as wide as the 2.35 Kinetics.

Thanks

Couldn't have said it better. Perfect tire for BC coastal riding during the wet season.

Had the 2.3" & 2.1 Nevegals mounted on my HT last week, so did an experiment to check rolling resistance.

"As an experiment (and I had them mounted up from a Seymour XC night ride yesterday) I commuted with 2.3" & 2.1" Nevegals, pumped up to the max. pressure listed on the sidewalls (65psi rear & 50psi front).

Found that I had to drop down two gears from what I normally run with the original tires listed in the first post."

(Original tires were a 2.1" WTB EnduroRaptor & 1.9" Specialized that looks like a HighRoller)

The Nevegal is only available in the Stick-E compound, but apparently there is a Dual Compound coming (might be available now).
I only ran the 2.1" rear Kinetic (Stick-E) for a few rides while I was trying to find a 2.1" Nevegal to buy.

It worked okay, but the tread isn't as agressive as the Nevegal.

Currently have the 2.1" Stick-E Kinetics on my wife's XC FS.
For dry conditions, the WTB Mutanoraptor 2.4" front & 2.24" rear is a good combo. That is probably what I'll go back to for road trips to dryer locations.
