Need to replace K2 Zed 3.0, need suggestions
I've been riding a K2 Zed 3.0 for about a year, and has been a year of disappointment. I realize I should have coughed up more coin to get a better bike to begin with, at least with better components, but I didn't know that then. I tested the Specialized Rock Hopper (I think that's what it was) and remember liking the way it felt. A friend of mine more in the know suggested the Stump-Jumper.
I ride a lot of ups and downs (think fire service roads with long climbs and long downhills), so am looking for a light hardtail that will hold it's own on the occasional single track too. Price range is probably in the $1,000 neighborhood. I'm living in Germany right now too, and they make some nice bikes here in case that helps.
Is there any hope for my current bike, or should I trade it in for something new? thx :thumbsup:

Why was the Zed 3.0 a disapointment? I am considering a Zed 4.0 locally.
Okay, so I've learned some things from the wonderful mtbr forums and in talking with other riders since this posting. The problem wasn't with the bike, the problem was with me. I was riding with all braun and no brains. I didn't realize/know that you really need to use some finesse, that shifting on uphills is a skill you must learn and practice. So I was breaking chains, cranks, derailers, etc. I thought the components were cheap, but I was really just riding like a [email protected]
So the bike hasn't been a huge disappointment, me learning the hard way that one must respect the bike has been.
Unfortunately, I don't have much to compare the bike to. But for me, I ride a lot of fire roads and some single track, the bike is actually fine. I've upgraded some of the components, the saddle is probably next, and now that I'm paying attention to shifting patterns and doing some minor regular maintenence, I'm really enjoying the bike again. Granted, I've been commuting for the most part the past month or so.
Check out the 4.0 and some other bikes and if you dig it, go for it. I'm so far from being an expert, my opinion counts little. I think for a beginner/intermediate rider, this is probably a good bike for the money.
