My new v.5 Heckler should be arriving soon and I still have to decide on the final touches to my dream build!

For rims I'll go for DT Swiss EX 5.1d laced to Chris King ISO 20mm thru-axle front / ISO QR rear.

Any suggestions for spokes and nipples please??

Preference goes for DT swiss, but which ones? Just had a look at the DT website and they offer a big variety of both.

I'm throwing quite a bit of money on the rims and the hubs so I'd like to get something equally good in spokes/nipples.

I'm 155 lb and into agressive trail riding and light FR.

Thanks in advance for your help.

By the way, does anyone know how many holes (32 or 36) the DT 5.1d rims will have? They will come as part of Santa Cruz's X9 AM kit.

Thanks again

Mike

I'm pushing 170# and ride 5.1 (32 hole) with DT super comp, alloy nipples, built by Mike G. at oddandendos.com. I ride an old 04 Heclker and ride argo trail, I ride my bike hard, I have been hitting plenty of big rocks, I don't steer away and pick my way through the rocks, this is the reason I bought a heavier set or wheels.

These wheels have been the best wheels I have had, I don't know if it's the rim, the builder or a combination of the two. I'm very happy with my wheels. My other wheels in the past, usally get a little out of true over time, not these wheels.

I also run the DT tubless rim stip which is working well once sealed up, it's locks non tubless tire beads like they were tubless. It's a pain if you have to break the bead loose, this is not good for a trailside fix, but it can be done. Sounds like you are going to have a nice set of wheels.

DT Swiss 5.1d rims and tubeless

Hi Spacoli- I had a few questions in regards to your post about the DT Swiss 5.1d rims and the tubless setup. I'm looking for some burly but lightweight rims to run tubeless on a new hubset (Industry Nine Enduros) and they recommend the 5.1d rims. I LOVE running tubeless with my current Mavic CrossMax XL wheelset (CRAPPY REAR HUB!!! totally shot after 2 years with maintenance and terrible engagement with only 2 pawls that crack and chip). So I really want some rims that will take my 185# plus pack of aggressive riding on my 6" all mountain bike. It appears that you think the rims are strong enough, but how good is the tubeless solution from DT Swiss? I have run Stans strips on rims before with some success (although I didn't like the rubber getting all gooey over time. I really LOVE the Mavic UST solution since the rim is not drilled. They are VERY easy to seal UST tires to - can use a floor pump no problem. They are tough to seal non-UST tires to. Trailside I need a quickflate to reseat the bead after fixing sidewall rips or superglueing big holes.

Can you give a little more feedback on the 5.1d rims running tubeless? My other option is running a slightly narrower UST rim from Mavic like the XM819? I like to run 2.35" tires and I'd like a wide enough rim to prevent the tires from rolling and burping.

Thanks guys!

See this thread and see if it answers some of your questions. I'm not sure how a UST tire is, but I'm sure sidewall tears would be less and stiffer sidewall would be a plus.
