Need San Diego Recommendations

759 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  mechmann_mtb
I will be attending a conference in San Diego during the first week of April 2006. The meetings are at the convention center and I will be staying at a nearby hotel. I want to take one day off from meetings for a MTB ride. I will need to rent a bike, arrange a ride to and from the trail, and, most importantly, find 15-25 miles of great singletrack. I am thinking that the weather should be perfect. I am from Nor Cal and do most of my riding in the Auburn area, the Lake Tahoe area (in summer) and north...
So - can I get a recommendation for: good bike shop near where I will be staying, best trail for a one day visitor, suggestions for arranging a shuttle? Thanks.

Can't help for rentals though I hear Beyond Bikes keeps a good stable. That is a trip from the comvention center.

yeah beyond bikes is your best bet on the "rental"

as for trails, i would suggest the San Juan Trail. if the technical aspect isn't high enough then you could always do Chiquito while you are up there.

this is my personal favorite ride.

if you are a LOT more advanced than i am you could try this...

but i would personally have to shuttle that one (climb san juan then descend chiquito and have a car at the Upper San Juan campground). we wound up riding this route by accident and i rode the 7 miles back down to the cars on Hwy 74. VERY dangerous road ride and i wound up with a severely sprained ankle when a [email protected]@$$ ran me off the road.

Noble and Indian creek as one ride is the best I've ridden in San Diego; two of the best anywhere IMHO. San Juan and Chiquita are also outstanding, not quite as sustained technically but Chiquita has it's moments, but it's a bit further than Noble. Call ahead to Beyond to inquire about testing a bike; I know they are a Turner test center.
SD Bike Rides/Rentals

We need to know how much time you will have to ride in order to give you a good idea where to ride. Noble Canyon is certainly one of the better rides in the county, but it is about 50 minutes from downtown. Will you be renting a car? You may just want to rent a bike from Bicycle Warehouse since they are so much closer to town than Beyond Bikes, and seeing that time will be an issue, you will want to spend as much of it on the trail as possible. Beyond Bikes is quite a drive from either San Juan or from Noble Canyon. If time is short, you may just want to ride Sycamore Canyon or Anderson Truck Trail. Anyhow, check www.mountainbikebill.com and you will see several of the better local rides posted there. Be sure to email Bill Porter and tell him how great an asset his website truly is!

i had a blast this past weekend. you should have been with us on sunday!!!!!!!!!!
Old signature needs updating...

Yeah, I added that signature back when i had my Ringle hubs (Mavic 517's). It was a funny quote from a buddy of mine. How was the ride Sunday at the Luge? Francesca wants to ride out at Noble soon with you two. I cleaned up my bikes and rode the trainer in the garage today...... Not exactly San Juan trail, but it keeps me in shape to get to the top.! We will all have to ride again very soon!

my bad... it was saturday's ride (allison was ribbing me for posting the wrong day). the Luge was awesome. it was the second time we rode it and i was pushing a bit harder. i wound up with another unsealable puncture :( on the front this time! i was bombing through a rock garden and floated a really rough section but came down hard on a sharp rock with the front tire. phhhsssttttt... phhhsssttt... phhhsssttt... phhhsssttt... phhhsssttt... "F$#@ing S$#@" hahahahaha.

i agree we should ride again soon. keep us informed onthe noble canyon date. PM me with your number and i will try to keep you updated on our weekend rides in case you can break away.
