For a winter project, I am restoring an old rigid HT to use for family rides, hard packed trails, gravel roads and such. Can anyone recommend a good quality primer and paint, and a final clear coat? I do have a high build rustoleum primer, but if you know of something of better quality for bike frames, let me know. Thanks in advance....

Doesn't anyone do full frame-off bike restoratons? You know, completely strip your bike down to its frame, sand the frame, paint it and then build the bike back up with all new parts, etc.? Kinda like an old Chevy....

I always use a self etching primer over bare metal. Then a sanding primer coat followed by base and clear. I use Tamco vases and clears and shoot them though an automotive style HVLP gun. If you're using spray cans exclusively, Spray.Bike.US makes good stuff as does GOLD 400ml Artist Paint if you have an auto paint supply store near you, they'll have etch primer in a can or I'm sure you can order it online. Get the etch primer for sure.

Wow, I was just up the road at the shop where we did my classic truck restoration, they said the same thing! Good advice, thanks.

Not really worth the effort IME, specially for some run-of-the-mill frame.
For something rare or nice, media blast and powdercoat FTW.

Is there any way to move a post, sorry, I didn't notice it, but this should be under "Vintage, Retro, Classic", can a mod move it?

Go to lauerweaponry.com and get some Duracoat.
It’s a self etching epoxy based gun coating that adheres to pretty much anything.
I used it on a lot of things, including car parts and complete bike frames and it’s crazy durable.
Their latest offering is called “badass” coating, and it’s even better than their classic line.
It even comes in spray cans, in case you don’t have access to an air compressor and hvlp paint gun.

Summit Racing .com I bought Acrylic Urethane primer and activator there, use it for everything, bikes, cars. Good price. They sell one step paint also.
A metal etching primer is probably a good thing if the price is reasonable.
I gave up painting base coat - clear coat years ago. Way too much work and money. Buy the one step acrylic urethane, it has plenty of gloss for way less money and time.
