I'm thinking unless you're doing trials or racing semi-pro+ you almost never need to use anything other than 175mm cranks. Shorter and you're robbing yourself strength and efficiency, longer and you're compromising clearance in technical riding.
IMO you really have to have a specific need in mind to use anything else.
I'm running 175s and have a 38.5 inseam. I suppose if anyone should have longer cranks it'd be me.
I really like the XT cranks, I think they're easy to work with, hold up nicely...the BBs are so-so but cheap to replace and/or easy to rebuild. A buck eighty is a decent price.
