need advice on wheel purchase

543 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  mtnbiker72
I have a '09 rockhopper running V brakes and I'm looking to upgrade to discs. My buddy just upgraded his rims and is offering to sell me his stock Alexxa rims off his '10 specialized P1 for $100. Should I jump on this or offer him less. it's just the rims, no cassette.

The other question is should I decide to pass on this deal what is a good set of wheels to look at? Most of my riding is in Florida but I also ride in GA. and probably further north in the future as well.

Thanks in advance.

P1 wheels are overbuilt. Unless you plan on dirt jumping, forget it.
By rims, I assume you mean wheels. The stock wheels from a P1 (All Mountain?) are decent but the hubs are kind of no-name. Doesn't mean they're bad...but hard to tell. If they were brand new, then $100 would be fair but used...no. You can pick up a good set of wheels on BWW for a little more that have much higher quality hubs and are hand built. For example, the Sun DS1 rims with XT hubs and DT Swiss spokes hand built for $135
So what would be a fair offering price? $60? $75?

Wha should I look for if I decide to just get new wheels? It seems like there are a ton of options with hubs, rims, spokes, etc. Should I look at or stay away from any brands in particular?

If your looking for a economy set (under $200)

-Shimano Deore M525 or XT M756 hubs (do not get M475 hubs if your going to be anywhere where you ride in the wet)

-DT Swiss or Wheelsmith spokes

-Sun and WTB are the most commonly found rims in this price range, some lower end Mavic can be found sometimes too...they're all good.

-Handbuilt is better than machine built, will likely be a longer lasting wheel.
Thanks for the advice, I'll look into those and see what I come up with.

Might check the last two sentences in my first response;)
