I figured I would ask this here since the frame in question seems to be fairly popular for commuter builds.

I would like to use a triple crankset with a 53t big ring. (I know nashbar says 48 max.) The problem I am running into is the FD (SRAM X.9 low clamp bottom pull) I wanted to use will not clear the rear tire(700x35) when positioned for the height of the big ring.

One variable is that the FD is a 34.9mm that I was planning to shim to fit the seat tube

I guess I am looking for FD recommendations that are known to work with this frame and a 53t big ring. But other solutions are welcome.

The way I see it my options are:

Compatible FD if available
Going to a 46/36 double
Others?

Thanks

I can verify that you can go larger than the 48t maximun chainring that Nashbar suggests. I'm running a 50-39-30t road crank on mine with a FD designed to match the pull of a flat bar road bike. I'm also running 700x35c tires and I don't have any clearance issues. I know that there are other forum members that are running full size road cranks with no clearance issues. Hopefully one of them will let you know which FD they are using.

Thanks for the info.

The more I look at it, I think a road specific FD will work. The X9 I was trying to rescue from the parts bin appears to have a much beefier mechanism on the backside than the pics of road FDs I'm finding on ebay.

Of course I'm still up for specific suggestions on compatible FD's.
