Nashbar X Aluminum hub spacing... argh.

So, they've got some left in 135, and I will have it on Wednesday!

Note for all of you dealing with Nashbar customer service: The people in 'customer service' were uniformly unhelpful, and unwilling to even attempt to find out if they had the 135mm size. Thankfully, I had also emailed 'customer support'. It was Luke, in customer support, who was phenomenal, and in a matter of an hour, located the frame with the correct spacing and smoothed everything over. Why customer service couldn't be bothered I don't understand, but happy days, I'll have the proper frame now.

Oh, and that idiot yesterday who told me to just spread the stays should be fired. :madman:

Scary to spread the stays on an aluminum frame. People on here have done it without incident though...

I can't understand why they changed that frame to 130mm spacing. Mine is a few years old now, and it's 135. Bummer they found you one, I was going to offer you mine at only a $50 markup. :lol:

And that why I Prefer Steel

A very small advantage for steel. Ti is better anyway.

Still have not gotten to the bottom of this saga. The second frame was also 130mm. Apparently they do have the 135... but it's taking FOREVER. Will update soon.

Like I said, I have one... yours for only $599 :lol:

Good grief! If you`d have known how much trouble it was going to be, you could have just ordered a Crosscheck or DoubleCross frame to begin with.

Seriously... And I have the fork from the Swobo Crosby all ready for it too...

Now you're getting the idea why I stopped doing business with Nashbar; it ended with the credit-card hacking, but the steady lack of suitable parts, biggest ads on smallest inventory quantities -- they just canceled themselves out of my sources list.

I'm not advising anyone else do what I did, but I put a 135 hub in my 130 X frame and I have well over 1,000 miles on my bike with no issues so far. Now the rear wheel just slides in and out with no problem when I have to take it off and replace it to change the rear tire. Ideally, you should try to get a 135 if they have one, but there might not be a problem with squeezing the rear hub in.

While he COULD stretch the stays and probably get away with it, there`s no excuse for the run around. He checked ahead of time to be sure he would get 130 spacing, so that`s what he should get without having to fudge anything. If he were ordering a bicycle or bike parts from a sporting goods shop or a flower shop (ya never know), it might be understandable for the staff to not understand the spacing issue. But a retailer who specializes in bicycles? Not acceptable.

So, after much ado(and general frustration with Nashbar - though a number of their employees are wonderful and truly want to help - Nashbar just hasn't given them the infrastructure to do so) I've decided to ditch my plan to run a Nexus hub on the frame, and instead just purchased SRAM Apex front and rear derailleurs, and will run them with SRAM S700 flat bar shifters - should be super cool anyway, and a bit more versatile.

I really wanted to try it with the internally geared hub, but that will just be reserved for the Kona Cruiser summer project.

Also, I ordered the fork from the Swobo Crosby for this thing, and will sand it down to bare carbon, and then slap it on... should look awesome, and will give me the ability to upgrade to discs later on!

Will keep you guys posted on how things go...

Where did you end up w/ this? I'm close to putting one together myself. Just waiting for parts in the mail.

So what's your progress on this bike? I'm thinking of using the same frame in a build.

Alright, going to forget all that noise... Just going to spread the damn stays, stick the Nexus hub in there, and hope the frame doesn't break. Will have complete photos next week... stay tuned.

There ya go- if it works, it works. If it snaps, you`ll have a perfect excuse to get yourself a DoubleCross and move all your parts over :thumbsup:
