I am thinking of building up a hardtail as a (get ready for this) commuter, bike trailer hauler for my kids, 2nd bike incase fs has mechanical issues, possible xc race bike and lastly because I have never built up a bike.

The frame is on sale for less than 50, but it sounds like it might be heavy (4+ maybe 5+). I have a lot of spare parts so the frame will be the only real investment. I dont want to spend to much since I know things can, and will go wrong.

Go cheap

There are deals to be had out there. If the frame you're talking about is the steel frame with free seatpost, I'd do it. For what you're going to be using it for, it makes prefect sense. Depending on what the shipping costs are, this could be a steal.
