Hey guys, thinking of converting my shitter into a SS once I get my hands on a new geared biked.

I've converted another bike to SS in the past but this bike was basically for street use/flat and wasn't worked too hard (RIP).

A few quick questions (and also because I can't fidn the SS FAQ) -

- How do I get rid of the unnescary gears without buying a new casette?
- What kind of chain would I require, to tolerate torque and tension when cycling uphill?

Love what you guys are doing - there is a beauty in the simplicity of a well built single speed bike. :D

You could buy the conversion kit at pricepoint.com undercassettes.

Oh, and you could use a PC1 chain.

If you can take your cassette apart, unless get a simple BMX cog from your LBS and ask them for old casette spacers. You should be able to get the cog for $5 or so.

I have used SRAM 8 speed chains for years, and have had no chain problems.

Just convert now, you may save dough and not want a geared bike after riding a SS! :D
Hehe, I see where you are going but I think that a SS bike, whilest being pretty cool, still has limitations. There are some hills around here that I would simplynot be able to climb in a ss unless someone has invented a special chain which doesn't break and my leg's muscle mass increased exponentially.

If you ride a SS your legs will get stronger and you will be able to climb those hills. Don't worry about the chain unless you have installed it incorrectly. There are alot of people that ride singlespeeds up very steep and very long hills. Don't underestimate the power of a singlespeeder possessed.
