My ride from Santa Cruz to Sacramento

Hello, my name is Dwight and some of you know me and some don't. I'm with MBoSC and love bikes. I'm not looking for sympathy but I've been through a very difficult time in my life. If you're interested to know my plight a good friend set up a blog at www.dwightfollien.blogspot.com

As I've been going through the stuff I've been going through I wanted to find a way(something positive) to create awareness to the serious problems our present health care system has. I think my friend Charles said it best, "It's really amazing what you have to do and sacrifice to keep yourself healthy, when so many of us think we have these benevolent systems in place working for situations like yours." I'm planning a ride from Santa Cruz to Sacramento… Riding to Sacramento with a list of Californians who are unable to get the proper health care they need because of their financial status and/or they have a pre- existing condition. For those that are unaware there is a California law(for the benefit of insurance companies)that states "if you have a pre existing medical condition and have been without private medical insurance for over 63 days you have to be put on a 6 month waiting period before your medical benefits fully become available. There is still a monthly premium to be paid during the six month waiting period and you only receive discounts on generic prescriptions" Wow, there very few(1 or 2)generic diabetic prescriptions. What kind of deal did California make with Insurance companies? Well, I want to find out and it's my right. This law or whatever it is, is a huge part of the reason for why I'm in the situation I'm in. It's time to make some noise. Time to tell the insurance companies and our government that we are humans NOT a profit margin. I don't want anyone's children or anyone at all to go through what I've endured. Families USA and Health Access California are providing the media attention I need and we're still talking about a date for this ride. I have pneumonia currently so I'll have to survive this first ;)

What I'd like from the biking community are ideas, advice, routes to take… I'm a mtn biker and just started to ride the road. I don't have a road bike but I have a hardtail that will work. Already have my spandex and I look GOOD ;) You may contact me by email at [email protected] Thanks everyone!

Holy caca, dude. I'm unable to afford health insurance as well, but my problems pale next to yours.

I checked out yer blog, and sent you a little $$. Hope what you're doing brings more attention to your (our!) cause, and good luck- first with the pneumonia, then with your ride.

No fun.

One big problem in our healthcare industry is it's so over regulated, you can't buy the drugs you need over the counter - even if you're will to pay!

People should be able to buy necessary drugs, such as insulin from where ever they think is best. I have the same issue with my asthma inhalors. If I happen to lose one, they won't sell me a new one within 30 days of the last one. Even if I am willing to pay 100% out of pocket.

I would recomend you look at Canada as a source until your healthcare kicks in. There are many places online you can buy common prescriptions and the cost is not that bad.

Then - let us know what the cost is per month. At this point we have no idea how much help you need.

Then - focus on getting your benefits figured out.

Just one of many opinions you're sure to get. take with grain of salt.

Good luck.:)

Damn Dwight, at a loss of words to express what's going through my head. Amazing how the most powerful nation on the planet can be so ****ed up that it can't take care of people in need.

RE: route, hit as much single track as you can along the way. Then continue up to D'ville and Tahoe.

Dan. This nation is built upon individuals and individual spirit. You'll see a tremendous outpouring of support and help for Dwight in the near future, all without any legislation or government programs!

I'd really like to see the numbers and then we know what we're working with - but this forum always comes through for people when they need assistance.
Thanks for the replies so far

Gary, thank you :) That means a lot to me, I really appreciate your help... You want me to ride to Stockton and get you to ride with me To Sacramento?

Iheartbicycles, I appreciate ANY ideas  My monthly expenses vary. I now have Medi Cruz for my medical needs but I have to have NO income to qualify. There are still co pays but a lot better than nothing. I will get a monthly total and thanks for your concern...

Thanks francois

Dan, I love your route
Dwight,

I was lucky enough to get a bonus this week and your cause sounds worthy so I just shared some of it with you, hope it helps. Don't give up man, can't and don't want to imagine what you must be going through. One of my employees just got out of the hospital yesterday after being diagnosed as a diabetic.

Regards,

Eric

Ditto here. Dwight's got over $200 just from this thread and it's barely started.

Please keep us up to date, Dwight.

Awesome:thumbsup: How many pairs of jeans or shoes does my wife really need anyway?

Maybe FC can sticky the thread?
Hey Dwight! I think this ride can be done in two days. Map my Ride dot com has some routes that you might find useful.

Check it: Stockton to Santa Cruz (You'll just have to reverse it.)
Check it: Stockton to Sacramento

I don't have much, but I can offer you and your riders a place to stay, some warm showers and a nice meal. Of course, there will be tasty adult beverages too. Let me know. Hell, I might even join you on your ride.

jps
You should try to contact one of the news channels, I would imagine they would eat something like this up for a story! It would be great exposure and might force the hand of the powers that be. Keep fighting the fight, I can only imagine how hard it must be but you have a great goal to work towards.
You all amaze me...

I honestly wasn't expecting any donations. Though it really does help me right now...I'm really touched :)
Gary, see what you started :eekster: I still remember the fun we had on that Santa Cruz ride years ago, imjps and Ogre were there also!

imjps(Jim?) your offer is greatly appreciated and I'd love for you to join me...

MTBShane, the organizations Families USA and Health Access California are assisting with getting coverage but I'll also contact news agencies.
sounds like a lotta ham sammies and happy cookies are in order for your trip....roll on.
Dwight:

The ride is a great idea good luck with it and everything else you're dealing with. It takes strength to fight instead of just laying down accepting it.
I might have some stuff u could use.

Check your e-mail

Dwighty! Let's go for a ride. I'm with ya baby :)
Urgh.. this hurts to read.. sent a few bucks your way. I hope everything works out.
Been checking out routes

While I'm getting over this walking pneumonia I've been researching some routes... love how google maps gives you the bike route option  Looked at your suggestions imjps, wow, that way seems the shortest distance wise :D There are several options...

I really appreciate the support I'm getting, ya'll rock! And I hope I'm able to help when someone needs it.

Mike, you should do part of this ride with me, it would only be a warm up for you ;)

Kevin, got your email and will reply, thanks so much from one diabetic to another :)

Becky Boo you are always welcome to ride with Dwighty... and you should ride with me on part of this ride
likin dan's idea.....ride up the coast range as much as possible to santa rosa or further points north, then head easterly....stealth camp dirt/road trip, at least if you couldn't find singletrack, you'd at least be on dirt.....that's the route i'd try to find. fat tires....w/knobs.....then you wouldn't have to ride those nasty slicks on your rig.

thanks for the invite, i'd love to be a part of this ride....i'll bring some cookies.
