I bought my Mary xc lightly used on Craigslist for 700 bucks. I figured I would try this 29er thing and if I don't like it I could sell the bike on ebay at a profit. Well I liked it. The bike fit so well it was incredibly comfy and it handled very nice. But I wanted something a bit lighter because compared to my Turner Flux everything feels sluggish. I managed to find a new Dos Niner frame for $605. I swapped all my parts over and voila! I am loving this frame. The geometry is close to the Mary so it has that custom feel and the 18 inch frame showed 3.9 pounds on my scale.

I used 3m automotive paint protective film on the new frame because I heard the paint chips easily. Take a Close look at the Dos, the entire downtube and some areas prone to cable rub and scuffs are all coated with it. You can't tell unless you are right up on it. The stuff works great.

I almost bought a Mary XC, but my friends talked me out of it because it's such a tank (meaning heavy). Did you weigh your Mary frame? If so, how heavy was it?

The mary frame weighed 6.1 pounds on my scale stripped of everything but the headset and the derailler hanger. Yeah it is a tank and the ride was harsh for a steel frame. For the money though it was a good bike and the geometry is nice.

6.1 is a bit for a HT, but that is what my Sm Canzo 29er frame weighs (with shock).

The Dos I have is about 2.5lbs lighter.

Dos Niner can be built up as light as you want it! Mine has been great. I got a second hand frame the second time around (first one was trashed during my first ever race/event), and I've since scratched the top tube up in crashes. It's not horrible, but all frames lose paint. The Canzo chipped when hubby dropped an alan wrench on the TT before it was built up.

I figured it was gonna get scratched eventually.. :p

I am real happy with the way it rides. It feels like a hardtail on the climbs but the ride is just smooth enough for my old bones. The Mary was giving me a beating. I plan to replace the cranks with some new XT's and I will convert to tubless and go with a lighter tire. That should trim at least another 1.5 pounds. Another wheelset may be in the future but I will get some use outta the ones I have before I do that.
