Just got into mountain biking and i love it so far. I went on my first ride last saturday on a 10mile trail in orange county. I wore the arnettes that i wear all the time, but now my eyes feel burnt and tired. Can anyone recommend a good pair of sunglasses that wont make me look like a dork but will keep my eyes from burning the next day? I like simple styles, not those with wild shapes and colors.

I wear SPY Hybrid Scoops , they come in relatively understated colours and are quite comfy. You can even go for a polarized lens if you so wish. SPY has a range of other sunnies that mostly look sweet, however some aren't all that functional for riding.
Its also worth trying any glasses on with your helmet, sometimes the arms get in the way a little. I always strap my helmet on first then put my sunnies on afterwards just to make sure the helmet is properly secured. Good luck! :)

concerned with how they look than function I wish them good luck.

Wear what works. No one gives a ratsass how you look while riding.

ahhhh, never mind. no comment^^^

In addition to trying different glasses, you may also try a sweat band, or I prefer a skull cap, to keep the sweat from dripping in your eyes. Also, make sure that you are not using sunscreen above your eyes, or cologne or anything else that might run in and burn....

Oh, I can't resist.... Fred, I wish you luck.. No body gives a rats ass about your bashing every single poster on the beginner site either. Get a life!!!!

By the way, is your name Fred-cubed because you are "fred to the third power"?

or are you following Ahnold's Hummer?

I've not heard of burning eyes before,. can you further explain? Tried any eye drops?

Jim
Just a really painful feeling in my eyes, like they were sunburned. They are red and itchy. I have tried eyedrops, and it helped. But i still need to get a good pair of glasses to prevent this. I dont think my glasses are polarized.

It sounds like dust and wind

I wear contacts when I ride so I have to wear sunglasses with a tight fit and a full wrap. I wouldn't wear them around town but it's a different purpose. Get something with good coverage that doesn't let wind in from the sides. Wind and dust will play havoc with your eyes.

Is it possible that's it's caused by allergies? Here in the southeast everything is blooming, budding, etc. and a lot of people are suffering when they are outdoors.

has nothing to do w/sunglasses. This is sweat getting into your eyes.

One of the guys in my race group sells outdoor glasses that are awesome. His office is about a mile from my house...(in Las Vegas). If you are making a run to Vegas, he is in the NW part of town. They are also on the net...

The company is Nu Vision. I sampled a pair at the last race and was pretty impressed.

I wear contacts, and anything that increases the wind flow into my eyes makes them burn. Rather on an ATV, Jet Ski, or the bike, I alway's have to wear sunglasses mainly to block the wind. A good set of Oakley's does the trick for me, and they are very good for warrenty reasons, and not so warrenty issues. I had a bad bike crash a few years back, and basically the sunglasses it the pavement and was shoved into my eye-brow. It was a nasty cut. I called Oakley up and just wanted a new frame. They asked how mine got broke and I told them, they still replaced the frame free under warrenty. All I had to do was pay for shipping.

I've tried Spy Microscoops, a few Smith Slider models, and currently own a couple Rudy Projects. The latter are the best I've used to date.

The Spy's were average, kinda cheap feeling for the full retail I paid. Eyelashes would touch the lenses too. Every pair of the Smith Sliders I tried were ok; the Diablos with the adjustable temples were the best fitting out of the Smiths I owned. The Rudy's are the best to date: adjustable temples and adjustable nosepieces. Didn't know how bad the rest fit until using them. Excellent designs and excellent fit. Never tried Oakleys, but I'm sure they're great too.

If I had to recommend a pair that would work well everywhere and increase your cool points, I'd say get a pair of Ekynox SX's. They have a nice wrap to them with good ventilation; plus they look absolutely stealthily. The only thing not stealthy is their price tag(but I think they're worth it).

ps My head may be of different size and shape of yours; what may fit my melon may not fit yours. Therefore, a pre-purchase fit session is recommended for all cranial accessories.

Have you ever seen the Puff head cloth or whatever it's called? It's a nice seamless cloth tube that you can wear like a bandana and it keeps the sweat away, and it's not bulky and doesn't affect your helmet fit.

A Cheap Alternative

I'm pretty sure that this has been suggested before, but how about safety glasses? No, I'm not talking about the ones you used to wear in high-school chem 10 years ago. Check these out:

https://www.janisan.com/Radians/vision.htm

Most are less than $5, offers UVA/UVB protection, ANSI certified, scratch resistant, and anti-fog. Hard to beat this deal. I have a pair of Oakley Monster Dogs, and Smith's Factor, but now regret not having checked these out first. You could get four pairs w/ different colored lenses each for a fraction of what you pay for Oakley's!

...Or you can bling at $10

Ive worn the smith sliders, some Spy models, and a bunch of others.

By far my favorites are the Oakley half-jackets. They do a phenomenal job of keeping the wind from sneaking in around the edges. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find mine since I went to Moab. It's really annoying.

Other tips if you ride with contacts.

Carry a little tube of contact lens solution in your camelbak. Nice to have when you get a little mud in your eye.

I wear sweatbands under my helmet. Fox makes them, but they only last for about 3 months before they lose their elasticity. Make a huge difference - I can't even ride without them anymore.
