MTB in DC?

Rock Creek trail is nice and scenic to take a bike for a spin on it. ..and it is right next to my place w/out a need to drive to it. But here is my question:

Is there a reasonably off-road experience (MTB, cross-country, or just anything unpaved) available in DC?
Maybe something close to the city so I can bike out there and back? Or take a public transit?

Your suggestion are really appreciated! Oh, also: anyone interested to ride together?

The D.C. area has a lot of good places to ride and MORE does a good job of taking care of it all.
