Mt Rogers/Damascus??

I just got my brand new frame built up, I love this new bike... but the last 2 days have been a little icy here, not bad enough to keep me from riding, but enough ice to slow me down a litle.

I'm think about just driving south on I-81 for about 300 or 400 miles... just to get beyond the ice, so I can get in 3 or 4 good days of riding!

I see this would put me near Damascus VA (I'm in Martinsburg WV right now) ...and I see the weather forcast for southwest VA is high 30's and low 40's for the next 5 days... this is good enough for me!

I have found a little info in the archives here... but does anyone have any recent info on trail conditions in the Dammascus - Mt. Rogers area? - Also is it currently hunting season down there?

Try this site <http://www.bikeguy.net/index.htm> It's full of info on riding in the Damascus
area. It's got suggested rides and contact info for local bike shops, restaurants, camping,
etc in the area. You could call a shop and ask about weather and hunting.

There is lots of riding available in the Damascus area. My first recomendation is to visit www.bikeguy.net and look at some of the routes on that site. Next I would recommend picking up a map of the area, my favorite is the National Geographic 786. The trails around Iron Mountain have many different options depending on the difficulty and length of ride you want.

Mt Rodgers should be full of snow, I was backpacking up there in october, and there was 4 inches down, and the area around here just got more snow, and will get even more thursday 12-15 so... Damascus might be a better choice due to the altatude issue (rodgers is the hightest piont in VA)

Thanks for the replys...

We got 8 inches of snow here Thurs, so I decided to hop in the Jeep and drive south.

Yep... I rode by Mt Rogers, it was a little snowy with some ice... didn't look like it would be much fun. - I jumped back on I-81 rollling south and turned off on 26 south in TN. I ended up doing 4 good days in Pisgah. Temps in the high 30's and 40's... even made it into the 50's one day.

What a great place to ride! ...in 4 long days I didn't even scratch the surface of what's there to ride in Pisgah.

I live in Hendersonville, NC about 30 minutes from Pisgah and 20 from Dupont State Forest. Both have phenomenal riding. I still love my car trips though and Damascus is a must ride. We were there last summer and did a 35 mile point to point from the Beartree Campground where we camped ending Damascus downtown if you could call it that. On the entire ride of 96% true singletrack we only saw one hiker and a truely beautiful, rugged place to ride. If you loved Pisgah then the Iron Mtn is deffintely worth checking out.
