I'm moving to Winston-Salem for a postdoc at Wake Forest. I'm not going out until mid August, but I'm pretty outdoor-focused, so I'm already lining up potential things to do during my free time... I've read up on most of the close local rides. Figure I'll bag those on weeknights after work. What's good 30-90 minutes out of W-S?

For the bike nerds: Also, I was curious how single speeds go over in NC. I was on one for a while a few years ago, but ended up getting rid of it since UT is better served by FS geared bikes (there are exceptions of course). Thinking of getting a SS 29er to complement my Heckler.

Winston Salem is the center of some great riding. First on the list would be Dark Mountain area(40mins west). Next Greensboro trail system(20-30mins east). Third take a trip to Pisgah(2+ hours west). Those areas should keep you busy for a while.

Been riding a 29" single speed for 3years here in glorious NC. Some of the long climbs in Pisgah makes one wish for a few extra gears but there is nothing in the piedmont of NC that makes me want to change up. Enjoy W-S. Also check out Foothills brewery if you are into a pint or four. Good stuff.

Depending on how far you want to drive, there are tons of trail systems near the Pisgah Nat'l Forest, Dupont State Forest and Bent Creek Experiment Forest, and a bit further east is Tsali. Also, Sugar Mtn has a DH park.

As far as the bike goes, I would not like to imagine climbing Pisgah trails on a single speed, that is just cruel. Stick with something with gears.

Gonna miss all that Utah has to offer (w/ the exception of certain cultural phenomena), but I'm looking forward to seeing what NC has. I was skeptical at first, but upon a little research and poking around, NC sounds super fun.

Douthat State park in VA is 2 hrs away, up rt220. Amazing riding and great camp ground, you will not be disappointed. Our riding group is heading back up there in Oct after we hit Pisgah in August. Welcome to town.

Well...maybe a little longer than that! I had to race back to Winston last year as one of my kids broke thier arm while I was riding, so I may have set a new land speed record.
