Sometimes I think twice about going down some things because of the though of falling and landing face first in some rocks or something. I think wearing a mouth piece might help my confidence. Anyone wear one? Would a mouth piece even help if I wrecked?

Interesting question...

I look forward to hearing some enthusiast responses.

I myself used to wear a mouthpiece when I played pick up basketball.

Now, that I am starting to get physically active again, I wonder the same thing (I've chipped my teeth before during various sports).

The other day I got hit in the throat by a golf ball on the golf course. I guess I need to wear a mouthpiece when I play golf too, huh?

I'll keep my eye on this thread.

in some cases a mouthpiece can prevent a concussion. I think, though, that a full face helmet would give you more benefit (assuming you don't already have one)
Thing to consider... if you have never worn a mouthpiece before, breathing will take some getting used to. Probably only need it on the downhill sections, so put it in your pocket on the way up. You can get a decent one for less than $5, so why not just buy one and give it a try?

Hmm not a bad idea, not for impact reasons but because I have a bad habit of gritting my teeth too hard and have actually hurt myself from it before.

While cycling I think I have good control and usually dont bite down, but weight lifting and when I get angry I do :/

I need one for then ^^

YES, I DO!!!!!!

I started wearing one after I ran into a mtbr that look like he had a decal on his front teeth. Turns out he was wearing a mouth piece with a biking decal on the front. I would have never noticed if it wasn't for the decal. The mouth piece is more like those invisiline braces so it hard to tell you're wearing one. The dude was a dentist. He told me my personal dentist should be able to make one for me.

I had my dentist make one for me. Since it custom made it's not bulky like the ones from the sports store. I can talk, drink and breathe hard with it on. I can't eat with it. Mine would be invisible except it turned yellow from all the gatorade I drank with it on. I wear it with my half-lid. I don't wear it with my full-face. I am thinking of wearing it with my full-face after crashing and having the helmet shoved up over my mouth with the straps on tight.

I wear one because I don't want bionic teeth or dentures. My grandpa wore dentures.

I actually was thinking of posting something about a mouth piece aftering reading the post in the Passion section about Francois losing his teeth.

The President of the USA wears a mouthpiece when he rides. Can't damage those pearly whites if you're leading the free world.

very interesting idea. how much does something like that cost from the dentist? does insurance cover any of it?

i wear one to bed due to bruxism. most insurance co's don't cover custom mouth guards. my first quote was for $600, but i found a dentist that only charged me $275. call around.

I don't know about the insurance. I got it a long time ago so I can't remember how much it was. I know it was way more than the store bought kind. The custom is worth it because the only time I have to take it off on a ride is to eat.

I forgot the POTUS wears one. Didn't he land on his face a couple times.

Interesting...

I wear one only during the colder months. It has nothing to do with fear of breaking my teeth or knocking them out. My teeth are really sensitive to cold, and with all of the huffing and puffing involved in MTB, I'll get all day toothaches unless I can keep the cold air off of them. I got frustrated with the bulky and ill-fitting sporting goods store models, so my dentist custom made one for me. It was insanely expensive, but he gave me the mold to keep, and said the next one is on the house.

Not sure how much it helps, haven't face planted yet. Does hinder the breathing a little, but not to the point of gasping for air. Started wearing one when I got my braces on. Got fitted by the dentist, cost was included in my treatment.

He would do well ...

Judging from his riding capability on dry pavement, he would do well to wear body armor and a full face helmet as well. Of course, this would negate the value of cycling as a photo-opportunity.

thought about it after cracking my two front teeth. but the problem is that i breathe through my mouth so much when i'm riding hard that it would probably fall out and definitely be a nuisance
Custom Lab Fabricated Form Fitting Protective Oral Appliance-$300

Total: $300

vs.

Two Dental Implants-$3000

Two Crowns for Dental Implants-$3000

Bone Graft/Site Developement for Dental Implants $1200

Temporary Prosthetic Device (flipper)-$600

Total: $7,800

Do the economics. It's much cheaper to get a mouthguard. Yes, I wear one when I bike. Yes, I am a dentist. My mouthguard fits so well and comfortably that I don't even know I am wearing it. I can breathe and talk just fine. Vastly better than a boil 'n bite.
