Mounting a rear rack to a derailleur hanger?

510 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Wheelspeed
I mounted a rear rack to my ~2008 Giant Yukon, choosing to use the threaded holes that were part of the frame. This means I do encounter heel strike when I use panniers. the frame does have holes further back which could solve the heel strike problem. On the non-drive side the threaded hole further back is part of the frame, but as shown here, on the drive side it is in the derailleur hanger. My guess is it might be useful for a fender, but probably shouldn't have the weight of a rack on it. What is a reasonable maximum weight the derailleur hanger could handle if a rack were mounted on that rear hole? Or would that be totally inadvisable? I'm grateful for any thoughts on this.

I don't know about the hanger mounting, but tend to agree with what you're thinking.

As another option, I put one of these on my daughter's bike.

To be honest, it was always a little clumsy dealing with the rack while dismounting and mounting the wheel, but it was solid.

Get a spare then try it. To be fair, that screw hole isn't near the derailleur drop which is typically the weak part in a crash. I think it'd be okay but I don't wanna be the guy that tells you that and then it gets bent, so just get a spare first.

That's a good idea. I'm usually so afraid of breaking something, forgetting that a $10 part that can be replaced doesn't run much risk.

I have a spare derailleur hanger for every bike frame I've ever had. I guess it's like an umbrella. If you bring an umbrella, you won't need it. ;-)
