Just an update, I did mod my boots for cleats:

I've got about 200 miles on them now without problems, coldest so far is -10F. In addition to the boot, I switched to Shimano M424 pedals to have a nice platform for the whole boot to rest on.

I've seen some folks try and cut some of the sole out, glue a normal shoe plate in and then mount the cleat. Depending on the use you may not get a ton of life out of this type of set up.

A cobbler might be able to remove the sole so you could work internally to mount a plate like a typical mtn bike shoe and then have the cobble re-install the sole. I would think this would be a more durable solution.

When I mounted my cleat I used a screw plate on the inside under the insole, and a little longer screw than I had with my regular mountain shoe. I didn't take much off the bottom of the boot except a few rubber grip cleats. I wouldn't do this without a screw plate on the inside.
