Mountain bikers and catching air... (Maybe trial riders too?)

These guys that are out there catching big air...

Can you tell me what the status is if they are wearing regular tennis shoes or clip on-pedal shoes or what?

Whenever I catch even the smallest amount of air (when I am mountain biking), my feet come off the pedals and then I bust... myself... and wipe out.

Thanks,
S6

If you were regular tennis shoes, you are running platform pedals. Clipless pedals are where you actually "clip in." You have the pedal, then a cleat on the bottom of the shoe which clips into the pedal.
Are platform pedals and clipless pedals the only 2 types of pedals?

Also, I don't see how switching to clipless pedals would be a disaster in the making? Having the bike travel with me seems like it would be a/the solution...

Thanks,

There's also toe clip pedals, but very few people use them for mtn biking.

MTN biking with clipless, some like it some don't. Some don't like it cause they don't like the idea of being attached to the bike in a fall. If you ride XC or trails, clipless may be the way to go, but for DH, platforms are generally the more poplular choice.
I appreciate your guys input to this thread...

Who/what type of rider uses toe clip pedals?

What type riding do you do? What type pedals do you have?

I think at least some track riders still use toe clips.

For most, it is the outdated predecessor of the clipless pedals.

My commuter/errand bike has very ordinary platform pedals.
My trailbike has Time ATAC XS clipless pedals attached now, but I have a pair of big spiky platforms (or "flatties") as a reserve, in case I want to try something different.

A lot of fixie riders run toe clips.

On my trail bike I have Shimano PD-520's. They're all right, and don't carry a large price tag, but I sure as heck wouldn't mind running some Atac's...

If you have a problem keeping the bike with you using platforms then if you have clipless you would have the tendency to bring the rear to high and land too heavy on the front wheel. The end result is a nice, but not so pretty face plant.

Listen to 29Colossus and build up skill. Don't too far over your head too fast.
