Hi all.
First time user here. I am looking at getting my first Hardtail Mountain Bike but I am having a hell of a time deciding. I am looking at spending around $600 so I understand with that price I will be getting a low end model- which is cool. My needs are like many's: light, efficient, fast etc. Mostly flat road riding but bush riding too. *Edit: The three I have been looking at are below:

Any advice on which way to go and any advice on the best brands?

Just judging by the specs, the GT seems more value for the money. The standard advice is, "ride as many as you can in your budget and go with what feels best" (end standard disclaimer), but I'd say that's good advice. If you're buying online (guessing based on the links you posted) I'd make sure they had one heck of a return policy in case you're off on the size.
