Because of the "on-road" bent of the dual sport I guess it's fair to say they are using much higher gearing than most people are running on 29"ers off-road.

I went back and read the original thread on this topic, and my own thread,
but what I found most interesting is the gearing on the Gary Fisher 29''ers.
The dual sport 129 and 229 both have:
Crank Bontrager Select 48/38/28 w/ISIS
Cassette SRAM 970 | 11-34 | 9 speed
I guess I should not complain, I am running 44/32/22 & 11-34T
