Monarch Crest Shuttle Full - What to do?

So the shuttle is full at 8 am. We have four riders should we:
1. Go somewhere else because there will be 35 other people and it will be crowded. If so where?
2. Drop people at the top and send one person down with the car to hitch back up. Is hitching on monarch from poncha springs easy? I have had some long waits for rides skiing on monarch pass.
3. Ride up the pass, but 17 miles on the road and a bunch of elevation doesnt' sound like fun on my nomad.
4. Take the shuttle at 10, but i hate starting late and getting rained on.
5. Drive two cars from colorado springs, seems like a waste of gas though.
other suggestions welcome

or best yet if someone else of going to be out there we could shuttle cars

You could park halfway, hit the road at the beginning a little and a little at the end. I recomend leaving a six pack in the car as motivation to get back up there!
It's been a few years, but I have hitched up the pass twice. Both times I got a ride within 15 minutes (with my bike) - both times it was by a fellow biker so maybe I just got lucky, but either way I don't think it would be much of a problem.

IMHO that would be better than starting late, plus you'll save some cash!
hitch hike

I would assume no big deal, that's what I would do if I could not do the shuttle. Or ask someone in the shuttle parking lot in Poncha to give you a lift back up. If you were really up for it you could ride, not sure if I would do that myself tho. That would be a long day!
early rain is the new normal

First off, riding up from Poncha is do-able, and there are some creative ways to parallel the road so that you aren't on the highway much. But that's pretty involved, no time for that now...

But that being said, if you did do that, you better be started by ~5am because...

This year is starting to look like last summer, where you really don't have until noon before the storms start. Yesterday friends of mine got rained off around 10 am. They started riding from Monarch a bit before 10 but wound up turning around and driving back down because of rain-thunder-lightening.

I really wouldn't worry about the crowded-ness of starting right when a full shuttle starts. Unless you're riding right at the pace of the other 35, you won't see them much.

There are some other things to ride up here. Get the book _Salida Singletrack_ by Nathan Ward.

Good luck.

There is a pretty big group of us heading there tomorrow (7/14/07) from the Springs. We are leaving around 7am and we are hoping to be on the trail by 10:30am if not earlier. I think we could get creative and get the four of you to the trail head. Our plan is to meet at the visitor center off of Hwy 285 in Poncho Springs at 9ish and load bikes and people into cars. If you decide to meet us, look for a reddish Toyota Tundra and a group of eight fugly looking freaks. I will not be checking back to MTBR this afternoon, so if you get this message either PM me or wing it and look for the truck and group of mountain bikers.
