Mohican Ride

Sorry no pics, the camera was in the camelbak but it would have taken energy to get it out...

After worrying about the storms that hit Ohio a few days before the trip I headed into Ohio, angling South and Eastward. Spent the night on one of the cheaper hotels along I-71.

Picked up a brochure for Mid Ohio along the way - apparently it was a race for Vintage cars this weekend.

Checked out and pretty easily found the park and trailhead. Along the way saw all sorts of nifty cars, MG's, TVR's, Austin Healey, and even a Ferarri or two. Lots of nice toys on the roads.

Once on the trail, geared up and ready to go - started at the trailhead and rode along. The first climb at first reminded me of Brown Co, it's only a mile uphill, right? WRONG! The first hill climb is a harder exercise than Brown Co by a significant margin.

The next several miles were a blast, a few challenges. Log piles were easy, not so easy were the small rock fields. It probably wasn't helped that the chain jumped behind the cassette during one of those sections. Rear wheel locked up as I slammed the wheel into a few rocks.

At the 4 mile mark, I stopped, looked at the map. The moment of decision had come. If I go forward, I commit to the full 24 mile loop. OR, I can turn back here.

I made my way forward. The next 8 miles were a blast, I was discovering a nice flow to the trail, but was still working to keep the speed in check (I didn't know what was around the next corner...) Had a mechanical as I was hitting some downhill switchbacks after a really fast flowy section. Chain behind the cassette again! (I had to put some lock-tite on the rear derailleur adjustment bolt after the ride was done, but that didn't help me much then).

Had to walk the switchback before getting the mechanicals all sorted out.

Made it to the covered bridge and stopped for 'lunch'. I missed the trail entrance somehow, and was on the road for a while. Picked it back up at the snowmobile trail entrance. VERY nice! The flow in that section was incredible. Felt like I was in the Ewok forest for parts of it. Trees maybe not as big, but a speeder bike wasn't out of the question.

I was fine until about mile 21 or so, then the legs decided that they were done. The rest of the ride (and now hike) was a lot slower. The tree cover had me looking at the watch to see if it really was as late as the shadows suggested. Not even close!

Pulled out at the campgrounds, and then realized that there was a bit more to go! Riding on the Rim Trail, and a tree was down. Walked around the tree, remounted the bike, and promptly endoed from a standstill. Fell on the bike and the rear wheel. Wheel was now pretty beat up. I don't know if it was that or the locked wheel in the rock garden. Still rideable, I finished up the trail.

Several hours, a lot of work, and even a lot of grins. Mohican is a lot different than the other long-ish trails I've ridden. The other trails didn't give me the same sense of perseverance and accomplishment.

I was going to take my brothers to Mohican a few weeks back. After riding it without them, it was probably a good thing. They are not 'serious' cyclists and even the 8 mile trail would have proven a challenge.

Good story! We just went there yesterday and had a blast, that first mile or so up hill was a killer. We have only ever gone out eight and back eight. Gonna have to ride the rest of the trail now after your description of it.
Congrats!! Doing the whole trail is no easy task. I finally completed the whole loop this spring. After the covered bridge, the trail picks up again immediately to the right. You missed the grueling climb to the next trailhead marker at the start of the Endor forest. AAAIIIEEEE!!! The Ewok forest section is a blast to ride!! That's my favorite section, too. Fast, flowing and fast--like a roller coaster!!

Now think of all the guys that did the Mohican 100!!

I just completed the whole trail myself last weekend. I think the section after the covered bridge is way more grueling than the first mile. Maybe just more tired.
Some of the trail between mile 21 and 23 was a bit rough. Legs didn't want to move. There was a guy I ran into that was on his second loop. Amazing!!!
I'm going back again in a few weeks. Probably my favorite trail now.
Mohican is a great trail. I went there for the first time last year, but I had my girlfriend with me, and the trail was far more than what she can handle so we had to bail and do the short loop. I went back a few months later to ride the entire trail. It was awesome. I need to go back soon.
I gotta say it's an awesome trail. I was there with Bionic the first time he complete the whole thing, he'd done almost of it but missed the last mile. I on the other hand had only done the first mile. It was brutal but a blast. Next year I'll be doing the Mohican 100k next year!
Had a chance to get out there today for the 24 miler. What a terrific trail! Standing ovation to the crew that built that. Great flow and most of the climbs were not too bad. Some were long but stepped vs going straight up and every one rewarded with a great downhill burn.

Ran out of water at about 20 miles and began cramping at 22. Next time I'll start at the covered bridge so i can enjoy the second 12 miles as much as I did the first 12 today.

I understand that. It's been a while since riding a trail had left me feeling that I accomplished something. Brown Co was the last one after I biked/hiked the Hesitation Point trail, or Ft Custer 2 red loops and 2 green... but those had a fairly easy out if I really thought I was done before I finished. Not so at Mohican.

I can just imagine the guys doing the 100 miles, and to the guys on singlespeeds out there... kudos. I want my gears thank you very much! :)

I'll be back, it's definite encouragement not to give up on the trainer and other miles... I need to be in better shape to enjoy the last couple of miles of trail.

It's in Loudonville (sp? might be Loudenville) Ohio, about 2 hours south of Cleveland.
Directions to the park (the mountain bike parking lot is across the street from the main gate. Look for the signs)

The trail map. Note on the right where it says trail head 1 and mountain bike parking.

FYI - you can bail and/or shortcut about every 4 miles at MSP. The road that you cross at the covered bridge intersects the trail at the 8, 12 (covered bridge, duh), 15, and 19 mile points. You can take that road to 90something then downhill all the way to 3 & the parking lot. Sorry, can't remember the number of the road, but there's only one & it's always a left turn to get back to 3 & your car. Don't be afraid to park at the lot near mile 15 either, so you're nice & fresh for that pine forest (ewok village) section.

It's a long trail, but the area that it occupies is not huge so don't be afraid to explore a bit. That big climb after the covered bridge is actually a really fun & scenic section, so try to hit it at some point in the future!!
I just did it yesterday ( i am here for the week working at a race in Mid Ohio)...i did not realize it was so long...great flow and some fun dh sections! My legs got real cramped at about mm22-23 and went slow the rest of the way. I wish this trail was closer to home! I had a great sense of accomplishment finishing it out even though i was in pain! I will do it as much as my body will let me while I am here...
Mohican is awesome, probably the best in Ohio. No matter what, I always struggle with the last 2-3 miles, but there is always a great sense of accomplishment after finishing the full 24. I'll be out there again this coming Sunday!
Hey guys, my shop is planning a camping trip on the weekend of 14 Nov. i was wondering what yal think about the Mohican State Park trails this time of year and if anyone would consider planning a ride sometime that weekend. From the 6 of us going, 3 of us have mountain bikes an 2 of us are regular weekend riders. We are Marines, so I don't think fitness would be too much of an issue. I'm not sure if the other two would be up for the full 24 mile loop, but I am willing to try it no matter how long it takes. Any input on trail conditions and camping info would be greatly appreciated.

Devildog,

The trail should be fine and rideable barring any major wind or rain event. The trail is leaf covered and slippery but not muddy at this time There is camping available at the state park and nearby locations. I'll try to post some local camping links.

Thank you and your friends for your service.

It is appreciated.
I went on the trail and did he 8 mile loop on sat. What a great day to ride. nice and warm. The trail was great. Not that technical, but the downhills were lots of fun. mile 7 kicked my arss. nothin but uphill on that mile. Makes me wish I had a granny gear. My setup is a 1X9. I didn't have the time to do the full 24 mile. Maybe next time though. I"m aiming for devils knob next camping trip.
