I just realized that the tire I ordered online (27.5 x 2.4) is optimized for a 35mm internal rim width, a far cry from my 28mm. Am I asking for trouble if I try to ride this combo?

They're optimized for 30-35mm, you'll be fine.

I run a 2.4" DHF WT and a 2.8" DHF, both on 29mm inner width rims.

WT are no wider than old 2.35 Schwalbe tyres...

It's a marketing ploy.

You'd be fine running them on 23-24 ID rims ;-)

How do I know??

I've done it & I'm still here ^^

Optimized means where you'll get the most performance out of the tire. You can ride it for less performance than that or your terrain and speed may require higher pressures where the rim width won't matter as much.

Ride a DHR WT 2.4 on a 26mm wide rim does fine, in face a little better than when I had the 2.5 DHF WT on the same rim...
