I have a challenge for you all. I found this bike on Craigslist and it has stumped me as to its origin. Has a superb custom paint job. A few pics...

It reminds me of an 80's Specialized. My 1986 Rockhopper's frame is similar to that but the fork on mine isn't as nice.

The cable guides on TOP of the bottom bracket are baffling on a MTB. Maybe custom made.

Not really. Several big companies did that in the early 80's Specialized was one of them.

I was wondering if Metro Bicycles (the shop) ever rebranded framesets in the early days.

No offense but that is a mass produced junker. Looks like my first mountain bike. Mine cost around $50-75 from the department store. I had a lot of fun on it though.

I would say its a step up from that dept store stuff wouldnt you? Its no Huffy. It was probably a $300ish bike back then based on the frame details...

Reminds me of the mid-80's Nashbar "mtb's". IIRC they had that type of BB cable routing, also that kind of dropout, but I believe they were lugged, not tigged.
