What are those things I see in pictures on the uppers to 'measure' the travel.
They look like hair elastics.
I liked to use a standard zip tie but I feel like dirt gets stuck under and around it only scratching the uppers.

Slide the zip-tie all the way to the top of the stanchions. It will only scratch them if you continually slide it back and forth. On my bike, when I slide it (gently) up to the crown, it stays put.

If you're setting up sag on a new fork without an O-ring already installed, try throwing some baby powder on the stanchions to measure sag... Alternatively, you can also spray some light oil like wd40 on the stanchions to see how much sag you have.

Maybe a piece of twine would work...
Dude, if you wanna go the ghetto route (no offense, I've been guilty myself) then cut a rubber band and tie it on snug... when you are done, just rip it off...
