Measuring fork travel??

How do you properly measure frok travel because i am getting more travel than i should???

You can tie a zip tie around the fork stanchion and push it all the way down against the slider. When the fork is compressed the zip tie will slide up the stanchion and stay in place at the point of deepest compression. Measure the distance from the zip tie to the slider. This method is also used for measuring the fork's sag.
Just how do you get more travel than you should?

Just curious...generally that wouldn't be a good thing unless the fork was properly modified....
