Measuring Effective Rim Diameter

Anyone know of a method for accurately measuring the ERD of a rim without having to buy a special tool or device. I usually use the DT spoke calculator for spoke length determination; I want to double check the DT spoke calculator number.

AND there are instructions in the DT Swiss spoke calcualtor's 'Help' tab.
