My family and I are PCSing to McChord this friday. After we get settled in we would like to do some riding. My 4 year old is still on his 16" DB mini viper and my wife is just a cruiser/smooth trail rider. So what are some good family spots to ride? Also, what are some good spots for me to work my FS bike out a bit?

Right now we are looking in Roy and Yelm for houses but regardless McChord will be our central location.

My sister + BIL + kids are over there, and if you ever run into dog mushers training w/ quads on Ft Lewis, they may very well be my friends from Roy. No ideas about real local spots, but for longer weekend rides Capitol Forest would be on my radar over there.

And having lived there for a couple years, I'll warn you now that urban road riding gets 'interesting' (as in "what were they yelling/throwing at me?"), and urban night riding is probably inadvisable altogether in Spanaway/Lakewood.

If you want to make a day out of it, a good family spot would be the john wayne/ironhorse trail. Really easy, lots of chance to spot wildlife and some good views. Not hard to pedal up and you can coast the entire way down.

Fort Lewis has some good trails to ride, one would be Miller Hill next to Division Drive and also North Fort next to Steilacoom.
