MBOSCers,If you're looking for a fun community event, join us this Thursday for a movie screening and trails panel at Patagonia Santa Cruz! Our friends at Patagonia MTB will be screening Dirt Magic, a film documenting Downieville, CA's journey from dying mining town to mountain-biking mecca. Inspired by a desire to save their home trails, shaped by a grassroots organization's unintentional stewardship and fueled by the sport's rowdiest festival, Downieville's newest dirt miners are using their reputation to create a model community for struggling mountain towns across the globe-and it all started with a van, a chainsaw, and a few maxed-out credit cards.
MBOSC helped coordinate a panel of local land managers, conservation groups, and trail experts, with veteran trail-advocate Jordan Carr to explore what a high-quality trail experience looks like, and how a common vision can make it even better for all involved.

Last week we announced Trail Vision Awards, a new event we're hosting on November 1st at the Rio Theatre. The event is a photo and video contest set on trails in Santa Cruz County. All are welcome to participate. The beauty of the event is that you can be a professional photographer or just someone who loves to take photos with your iPhone, and you have an equal opportunity to participate. There is a "People's Choice" category for both video and photos, so the audience will get to text their votes and we'll be projecting a live poll at the Rio! We encourage everyone to create something unique that showcases our trails! Email us if you have any questions: [email protected].
We are still looking for volunteers to help with course build and course marshaling at Old Growth Classic. Course build takes place on Friday, Sep 13, and course marshaling takes place during the race on Saturday, Sep 14. It's a lot of fun, so if you can help-out, please sign-up here!
Ibis Cycles is giving away a Hakka MX custom built with Easton components! For every $10 you contribute, you'll be entered into a drawing to win. Every dollar you pitch in goes directly to trails in Santa Cruz County. We are over halfway to our $19,000 goal, so please click here to enter now and help achieve this goal!
The Rides Guides are hosting their popular cornering clinic "Find Your Flow" on September 7 and October 5. This 5.5-hour trail riding clinic is set in the SDSF and will help you get the most out of riding Flow Trail. You'll find new lines and develop even more confidence on two wheels. A recent participant said: "Spending time with an expert instructor on the best trail in California, what could be better?" Learn more & sign-up here!
A few months ago our friends at Epicenter Cycling hosted a screening of Anthill Films latest work, Return to Earth, at the Rio Theatre. They donated all proceeds from the event raffle to MBOSC and the Monterey Off-Road Cycling Association! We received a check in the mail for $1,500, meaning they raised $3,000 total for local trails. Wow! Thanks Epicenter!
Upper stretches of Aptos Creek Fire Road will be closed on weekdays as CAL FIRE and State Parks fuel reduction work got underway last Monday (Aug. 12) and will continue for several weeks from the intersection of Buzzard Lagoon Road toward the Soquel Demonstration State Forest. The project is part of a statewide effort to reduce decades of accumulated brush and timber along strategic ridges and roads to protect lives and property. Get more details here.
