TRAILS CONSTRUCTION MANAGERMountain Bikers of Santa Cruz (MBOSC) is a rapidly growing trail advocacy and stewardship organization based in Santa Cruz, CA. We are looking for a motivated, dedicated individual to join our team as the Trail Construction Manager. The Trail Construction Manager position is a full-time, salaried, exempt position responsible for successful management of volunteer trail projects as well as fee-based consulting/contracting projects for MBOSC. Under general direction, this position will include direct oversight of the MBOSC Trail Crew including conduct, coordination, scheduling, and project logistics. This position will report to the Trails Program Director.
POSITION OVERVIEWMBOSC is driven by the desire to create the highest quality experiences possible for trail users in our region. We strive to build trails that are engaging and aesthetically beautiful, while minimizing their impact on the environment. We are looking for someone who cares deeply about creating high quality trails to join our team as our Trail Construction Manager. This person must be a passionate leader who will guide our rapidly growing trail construction team as we tackle larger and more complicated projects.
JOB DUTIES
  • Supervise the MBOSC Trail Crew, including managing crew and project schedules and logistics, and evaluating employee performance.
  • Work closely with land managers and project partners to keep them informed of work progress, access, and other logistical needs.
  • Create high quality volunteer experiences at trail work events by leading work planning effort.
  • Provide volunteer recruiting information to Community Outreach and Marketing staff members. Act as point of contact for volunteers working on projects outside of organized weekend work days.
  • Ensure work meets MBOSC and land manager specifications/standards and all environmental/archaeological protection measures are followed.
  • Primary person responsible for compliance with MBOSC safety program by staff and volunteers.
  • Track and document project progress, collect production data that can inform planning, estimating, and scheduling of future projects.
  • Must be able to work nights, weekends, holidays, or other irregular hours and adapt to changing work load requirements and organizational demands.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Team player: all of our work happens through strong partnerships with land managers, project funders, volunteers, and MBOSC staff.
  • Detail oriented: the small details are what make projects successful and trail experiences special.
  • Leader, mentor, and teacher: directly supervise our growing trail crew and volunteer base, and work with them to develop and grow their skills, responsibilities, and capabilities.
  • Communicator: timely, clear, and effective communication with staff, land managers, and volunteers.
  • Trails/construction knowledge and experience: a solid understanding of the theory and practice of trail construction and management. BA/BS in relevant field and 5+ years work experience in trails/construction desired.
  • Holistic view and environmental perspective: Familiarity with ecological principles and plants and animals found in Santa Cruz County/Coastal California. Basic understanding of federal, state, and local laws regarding wildlife protection, sensitive species considerations, storm water protection, and related regulations.
  • Strong work ethic: high integrity, relentless drive and enthusiasm, and a desire for long-term employment.
