I'm flexing my powers of being an educated consumer/shop employee. As some of you know a lot of the Maxxis LUST style tires were having delaminating issues, blisters forming between the different layers of casings. I've actually had this happen to two of my own tires, didn't think much of it, popped the blisters and went on my way. After I saw a handful of my own good customers tires with huge blisters it was finally time to get on the horn with Maxxis.

After jumping through a few hoops I finally got to the person who was trying to help me. I feel a little bad for her because it was obvious that Maxxis has a POOR warranty policy in effect and I was told that it could take up to 1.5 months for the issue to be resolved. I was then told that I would be better off contacting the distributor (in this case we use the Hawley Company) for our warranty which makes complete sense since Hawley obviously has so much to do with the way the tires are manufactured. <--- please note my sarcasm here. So, reluctantly I got on the phone with Hawley and they were much more eager to help me. Unfortunately I still have to ship out the old tires in question and now we, the shop are out tires because we've chosen to take tires out of stock for our customers. (Maxxis, this is an example of the RIGHT thing to do, take notes).

So... sadly the Maxxis tires that are currently mounted on my bicycle will be the last Maxxis product that I'll ever buy. A shame because I've really come to love their tread pattern. With UST prices pushing the $70 mark consumers have every right to expect a longer life span from a supposedly more durable product. Also as the service manager in my shop I'll be doing everything I can to keep Continental and Kenda products in the spot light. We may even go so far as to stop stocking Maxxis products all together.

Shame they couldn't walk down the hallway, put a few new tires in a box and ship them to us.

Just thought you should know.

Thanks for the headsup! I currently use the Maxxis Ignitor UST 2.3 in the front and it's been absolutely magnificent. I'm hoping I won't have any issues with them...since I have another one mounted on my other wheelset. It'll be a while until I wear both out. Keep us posted if other issues/concerns come up with them.

Whatever floats your boat...
A company that stands behind their product for a start.

And just so we're clear. I still think that the Ignitor could possibly be the best all around tire on the market, up until this point I suggested Maxxis first, and every thing else second. Now I'm forced to rethink what I'm selling.

I don't like selling things that don't work. To the first responder: don't sweat the issue too much. This was limited production problem (I got that straight from Maxxis themselves) so it's hopefully limited to the first few runs of tires.

It's not the tire situation that bothers me, it's the disinterest from Maxxis that bothers me.

Had the delaminating thing happen to 2 crossmark UST 2.1's. Had no clue what was happening to the tire the first time, till one of my riding partners says its normal and happens to his Maxxis all the time. Sorry Maxxis, you made all the money off of me you ever will.

My local shop is going the extra mile for me.

The shop had to contact the distributer as well. I did replace the offending tire with another Maxxis. I have full confidence, that the issue with the tire will be resolved eventually. Like you said they could have just handled it. They may not have fixed the problem and cannot send out new tires?? I don't know. If they have not by the time I need tires or if this happens again, I am out just like you. We'll have to see how this turns out.

Thanks for the heads-up. I was going to buy some High Roller UST's to try out, now I'm not so sure. Have all Maxxis UST's been having a problem?

In light of the issues with a particular batch of UST tires, we are now dealing directly with the end customer in regards to warranty claims. If you have a tread seperation issue with any Maxxis UST tire, please contact Maxxis via the website (http://www.maxxis.com/About-Maxxis/Contact-Us.aspx) to initiate the claims process.

All submissions will go directly to my inbox, and I will forward all appropriate emails to the claims department.

The high Rollers I used did not bubble on me, but neither did the CrossMarks..

FWIW, that was the first step I took. I never got a response.

I'll try again monday, thanks.

I am glad to see that Maxxis is moving to provide better cust. service. There was absolutely nothing when I looked at the Maxxis site initially. Since I have already given my tire to the shop and they probably have sent it back to the distributor, this will probably not work for me. Either way, I will let this come to fruition since it is already in motion.

I must check my gf's Ignitor LUST's for the delamination. However, the biggest problem I have with Maxxis is that the Ignitor 2.3 is nowhere near 2.3. It's not even in that Zone.

I had a beef with that too, however, their newer 2.4 and 2.25 sizes are true to size. Throw some 2.25 Ardents on that Pack JC.

I don't know if Ardents are available on this side of the world yet, or for what pricing, but the Contis and the Schwalbes I'm testing were really well priced, online and locally. The Conti is huge for the size and the Schwalbe is definitely in the zone. The Ignitor is closer to a Panaracer Fire 2.1 or even skinnier. Why bother writing 2.3 when it's a 2.1?

Because the 2.3 on the sidewall makes you look like a badass. I've always taken the size and subtracted 0.2" from it if I want to compare Maxxis to other companies, it's not that big of a deal...

So far I have had 2 Crossmarks tyres delaminate on me. However these are the wire bead ones. Reason I tried running them tubeless is that I was getting 2 to 3 punctures a week commuting to work on them. Compared to 2 or 3 a month when using slicks.

Bholwell - Would the same bad batch of rubber affecting UST tyres also affect the others? I do a lot of km's commuting and happy with crossmarks as they roll well at 60PSI and grip well at 40PSI so I can get away with commuting and dirt with only one st of tyres by changing the pressure. However I expect the UST tyres don't last any longer for commuting but cost 3 times as much.

If I can get away using cheap wirebeads CrossMarks tubeless without them delaminating I will. If it means having to pay 3 times the price for UST to stop the delaminating issue then I will go for slicks for commuting and another tyre for dirt and put up with changing tyres. I just wish Crossmarks didn't get so many punctures when used with tubes.

i put a maxis 2.35 DH minion on the back of my SJ and the damn captain 2.0 on the front is still bigger, not by much though so it should be fine, besides i wanted a tyre with a strong sidewall and good traction, i havent put it to the test yet but it should deliver

I found the customer service to be good. my only issue is that I got a Minion DHF UST 2.5" and the actual width measurement was 2.1" using a digital caliper. was no bigger than my 2.35" nevegal.. . dang, was looking for a higher volume tire.. had to send it back and get a Kenda Nevegal 2.5"..

When talking with them, they did say that they were moving to make their new tries true to size specs, but the current models do not get a revamp.

also.. The UST tires are narrower than the non UST tires.. they were trying to keep the weight down.
