In' the processes of deciding on a new wheelset for my Jamis XLT and I'm kinda hung up on a rim choice.

Most of my riding is AM, long days in the saddle, rooty rocky terrain. I'll jump and drop but am certainly not a freerider/downhiller. I've been interested in the Mavic 819's and DT 5.1's as they seem to fit that niche fairly well and I've never ridden UST before and would like the option. I've heard that the 819's are considerably narrower which is limiting to tire size... I usually ride a 2.1 so I'm not sure it matters?

Was wondering if you folks could point me in a the direction of some comparable UST tires...

Not dissing the DT, it's a very good rim but I really prefer Mavic's way to go UST. No rim strip, no sealant, UST tires go on and off very easily (as easy if not easier than a regular tubed tire) and the tires stay locked on the rim even if you completely release the air, very secure and solid interface, superior to any other tubeless system out there IMO.

I used those rims with 2.3 tires and people haven't had any problems going all the way to 2.5 tires so I don't think it will limit your tire size. They are also quite strong and stiff.

I would go with the Mavic if riding UST, with the DT if sticking with tubes. Personally though, I'm done with tubes on mountain bikes.

same here Mavic crossmax ust only problem was getting the valve stem to seal-up. UST work. Allows a much greater range of tire pressure

Still have a tube on the front casue it has't failed.
Valve stems can leak if not tight enough or too tight. If you have problems with the seal at the base of the valves, some suggest to put some synthetic grease on it (not petroleum based grease as it can damage the rubber seal) or as I do, just put a few drops of Stan's sealant around the junction between the rim and the valve, inside the rim cavity. No more leaks!

If you want to try tubeless, go with the Mavic XM819s. Really nice and strong and still pretty light. I've used up to 2.5 inch tires in them without trouble. They might be narrow by pure downhill standards (which is what the EX823s are for!), but they are plenty wide for AM use.

Has anyone used both 819s and DT 5.1s tubeless?

I'm picking a new wheelset, I already use 819s tubeless with Schwalbe Fat Alberts, 2.35". I like big tyres and tubeless, and the 819s work pretty well tho the tyres have rolled off a couple of times at low presures on corners.

But I've heard good things about the wider footpint of the 5.1s vs the narrower 819s with big tyres.

Any thoughts?

819s seem too narrow for 2.5s, fine up to 2.4s, IMHO

Not sure dts are up to Mavic quality, I saw a set of dt 6s pretty badly messed up, owner was not happy with them. The metal seemed too soft. I do like the width/weight of the dt 5s, though...
