Hey all,

I was/will be "gifted" a Maverick Durance that hasn't been ridden in like five years. I have a thing for bikes and I am fortunate to be in a positive to be able to drop some coin on an overhaul. With some free time over the holidays, I thought overhauling this maverick would be a "fun" project. I am trying to come up with a plan for the overhaul, and I thought I would reach out to you all for some pro tips and check to see if things make sense.

Tentatively... this is what I am thinking...

1) Thinking about throwing out the 3x9 drive train and going full 1x12.

2) The rear shock will probably need some maintenance. Are there step by step instructions that detail on how to rebuild/service the rear shock? From what I understand all the parts/equipment is standard and should be pretty easy to access, no? Or should I just say screw it and have this mythical "Ethan" person you talk about service it? Not sure there are any LBS in my area that would know how to service it... or am I wrong? is there a locator?

3) I am not a huge fan of the DUC 32 fork that is on it and want to upgrade it. I am thinking about putting a 29er (or 27.5) compatible fork on this with hopefully ~110-130 mm of travel. It probably leads to some slack, but hard to imagine this modification would make it unridable. Am I mistaken?

Most forks nowadays with decent travel have tapered steer tube... I see the headset on the durance is internal. It appears headset manufacturers make headsets that can take a bike with a headtube of a 1 1/8 with an internal headset and make it compatible with a tapered steerer... provided the internal diameter is 44mm? do people know what the internal diameter of the headtube on a durance is? I am not yet in possession of the bike.

Here is an article about one headset that does this conversion New headset allows use of tapered steerers in some 1-1/8in head tubes

This pink bike forum has an entry from someone in July of 2021 that did a conversion so that a bike with a 1 1/8 headtube could take a fork with a tapered steerer. Don't know internal diameter of the head tube of the bike he did it on...

Has anyone fit a Durance or ML7 with a tapered steerer? or a broader question has anyone made a tapered steer tube work with a 1 1/8 headtube on any bike?

On this forum I see some of you all are riding your mavericks with a juicy fox fork. Did you all do a straight/tapered conversion.... or did you just happen to snag an old fork with decent travel and a straight 1 1/8 tube? I swear these are not made anymore... or I can't find them.

Thanks!

First of all congrats on the bik. Where are you based ? Europe or USA ? There is Ethan in USA and alpatech in France that are known to take good care of these shocks. If I am not mistaken ndtuned in portugal do it also.
Between doing it yourself or send to someone (who not these three), I would prefer to try to do it myself, and if I didn’t arrive I would send it for one of the three.
About 1x transmissions, others have done it, including me on my palomino, and I think it matches well the bike. Take care for the front crank to not touch the frame.
Regarding rear shock overall , the docs on how to do it were on maverick website if memory doesn’t fail me. If you don’t find it, I check my archives and send to you.
Regarding the duc32, it can be tunned, but if you want another brand you have these options:
1) find one that still does 1.1/8 steerer (three years ago I think fox still did it )
2) you find and enterprise that does the modification of steerer (ndtuned in portugal does it)
3) the headset you mentioned

Hope you enjoy the bike

I'm pretty sure you cannot do this on a maverick frame due to the integrated headset or whatever it is called. It has a bearing that drops directly into the frame. A bummer as it would be a nice thing to be able to do that and straight steerer forks don't exist in quantity and breadth anymore.

I love Ducs, the weight alone is incredible for the performance. I have 2 and need at least 2 more for my Mountain Cycle Fury and my Titus Supermoto. If they ever need a home...

Gonna add here - Ethan is not "mythical" - and he's frankly the best suspension tech, wrench and all around good guy I've ever met in the craziness of the bike industry. I say that as an ANAL bike owner, who's owned many differnent bikes and keep going back to Ethan for everything when every other bike shop or tech just doesn't get it right. Also. - he was with Maverick during those good years, knows every mm of those bikes and now is likely one of what 1 or 2 folks out there that can legitimately assist you in your Maverick endeavors.... again - I dont say this for any other reason than to likely save you some pains or moneys by lookin elsewhere .... IM me if you need a way to quickly connect w him... you won't regret it...
