Here's my almost finished radical 29er conversion project.
I still have to wrap the seatstay cutouts with carbon fibre and sort out the hardware holding the dropouts.
I have no idea what to expect but I have a good feeling about the whole thing:D

Cool, keep on posting! I owned 2 Mav's an
ML7 when they came out
and later a Durance. Found one locally ML7 and got
it for my son. It fits me and I
rode it
around and remembered
why I liked these so much!
Great project, the seat stays make me a little nervous. I'm sold on 29ers and this looks very cool!

i suppose there is more effective rear wheel travel, as the axle now describes a longer arc ...

to a first approximation one might think it must be *roughly* 140 x (14.5+4.5) / (13+4.5) = 152 mm (i.e. each time wheel radius + monolink), but thinking again about it the gain is probably not at all that great, as the travel is effectively linear for over half the total and only describes an arc thereafter - net gain is then probably only a few mm ...

Thanks guys.

When I started the project I promised myself not to think too much about the numbers angles atc (head angle, bb heigth... ) other than just simply moving the wheel back by 30mm (1.2") and up by +20mm (0.8").

Apart from gaining a few mm of travel, I actually expect the suspension to be slightly less efficient (anti squat) as the chainstays will get longer in relation to the monolink. I may be wrong though...

Seatstays will be fine once they're wrapped with some 3-5mm of carbon:)
I'm lucky enough to know several local guys working with carbon (boat industry) so I'll have all the know-how I need.

I'll post more pics when I finish the stays.

A thin layer of glass fibre has been applied to separate alu from carbon.
Also in the picture a bottle of Pepsi with carbon nano tubes. Apparently Chuck Norris used to drink one every morning...

Hey Barteos, Seems like you'd be a good guy to ask, would a 650b conversion work to a Maverick? Thanks.
this has already been answered in other threads, both for the durance (definite no) and for the ml8 (mine yes (with pacenti neo-moto 2.3 few mm clearance, other frames uncertain) ...

Are you using a 650b on the rear of your ML8? What rim and what modifications did you have to do for clearance?Did you have to limit the rear shock travel? Can you post some close up pictures of the tire/stays clearance, thanks

i still had a 650b wheel set and i tried the rear in the ml8 'just to check' - i posted the results here:

no mods where carried out - but then i don't see how the ml8 could possibly need any limiting of rear wheel travel. there are no photos, and the wheel set was sold soon after.

a modern 650b such as the hans dampf from schwalbe would not fit, but something like a neo-moto 2,3 or the 2,35 from kenda may be fine in *some* other maverick rear triangles too. but then, *i* would rather just run the ml8 b6 and have big tyres all round ...

I agree about the 26" big tire. I will be trying a 2.4 racing ralph which is tall but not as wide as the 2.4 would suggest(on a narrow rim). Hopefully it will clear the stays. The OD should be close to a650b.
